Review: Rust and Bone

December 29th, 2012
rust-and-bone

Marion Cotillard shows some flesh, loses some flesh and shares some, too, in Rust and Bone, Jacques Audiard’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated drama A Prophet. The movie, about a crippled woman who develops an unlikely relationship with a knuckle fighter, features powerful performances but never delivers a knockout blow.

Review: ‘Not Fade Away’ Unfortunately Fades Away

December 28th, 2012
not-fade-away

The creator of “The Sopranos” makes his theatrical debut with Not Fade Away, a coming-of-age romantic drama set against the 1960’s rise of rock bands. Unfortunately, the movie fades away much faster than intended.

Review: If ‘This is 40,’ Thank God I’m 30

December 19th, 2012
this-is-40

Funny and perhaps predictive of my future, This Is 40 is the fourth movie from director Judd Apatow and a quasi-sequel to the hilarious Knocked Up. A snapshot of one week of the lives of married parents Pete and Debbie, This Is 40 evokes plenty of laughs, even though the scenes are somewhat aimless and eventually unnecessary.

Review: ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ a Tale of Two Movies

December 8th, 2012
hyde-park-on-hudson

Bill Murray plays someone other than Bill Murray for a change in the entertaining but wildly inconsistent Hyde Park on Hudson, a film that is at once a romantic drama and a lighthearted comedy. From the director of Venus and Notting Hill, Hyde Park on Hudson works best when it’s funny – and falls flat when it tries to be something more.

Review: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

November 27th, 2012
seeking-a-friend-for-the-end-of-the-world

It’s the alternate ending to Armageddon we never asked for. The space shuttle destroyed, a massive asteroid hurtling toward earth, humanity has days before it is wiped from the planet, and the planet destroyed. Within this context is set Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, a romantic quasi-comedy with lots of promise and not much else.

Review: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Shines, But Not as Brightly

November 26th, 2012
moonrise-kingdom

A boy flees his Khaki Scouts troop, a girl runs away from her parents, and an island sheriff and scout troop leader put into effect a massive manhunt to find them in Wes Anderson’s offbest comedy Moonrise Kingdom, an original and amusing, if not ultimately unremarkable, return to form for the director.

Review: ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ is Made of Gold

November 21st, 2012
silver-linings-playbook

Bradley Cooper plays a mentally ill man who lives with his parents and Jennifer Lawrence a troubled widow in the deliciously entertaining Silver Linings Playbook, a drama-comedy that slowly and unexpectedly transforms into one of the sexiest and most romantic stories of the year.

Review: ‘Anna Karenina’ is No ‘Atonement’

November 21st, 2012
anna-karenina-keira-knightley

Two movies directed by Joe Wright have been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Both of those movies starred Keira Knightley. Keira Knightley has been nominated for one Oscar. That performance was from Pride & Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright. Good things happen when the two join forces and they are back for an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.

Review: Lola Versus

October 18th, 2012
lola-versus

Indie darling Greta Gerwig, who won praise for her role in Ben Stiller’s Greenberg, stars in Lola Versus, an amusing and fast-paced drama about a young woman whose life is turned upside down when her fiancée freaks out and leaves her shortly before their wedding, forcing her back into the up-and-down reality of single life.

The Giant Mechanical Man Movie Review

October 11th, 2012
giant-mechanical-man

If you like Pam from “The Office” – or at least pre-marriage Pam from the early seasons – then you’ll enjoy The Giant Mechanical Man, a sweet and offbeat romantic comedy starring Jenna Fischer that has gone largely overlooked by mainstream audiences.

Review: Drown Yourself with ‘The Deep Blue Sea’

October 10th, 2012

Rachel Weisz. Beautiful. Good actress. Oscar winner. Married to James Bond. Star of The Deep Blue Sea, one of the most boring movies I’ve seen in a long time.

The Five Best Nora Ephron Movies

September 24th, 2012
nora-ephron-when-harry-met-sally

Let’s face it: The state of the modern Hollywood romantic comedy is abysmal.  Sure, there have been a couple of diamonds in the rough here and there; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch-Drunk Love come to mind.  The bad news is that I had to reach all the way back to 2004 and 2002 for examples.  For many, including myself, it feels like Hollywood is making the same movie over and over again, laden with clichés and a cast liable to include Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson.

‘Bachelorette’ Tries to Be Bridesmaids, Fails

September 7th, 2012
bachelorette-movie-2012

A year after Bridesmaids rocked theaters comes Bachelorette, a movie that is worlds apart in tone, humor and, unfortunately, entertainment value. The Kirsten Dunst-starring film wants to be funny but fails miserably, and that’s all you need to know.
