Between career opportunities and unexpected family situations, the initiation process to their next stage in life – the wedding – keeps getting pushed back, a victim of life’s little ironies and twists. The Five-Year Engagement looks at the ups and downs of their relationship, capturing the funny moments along the way. Unfortunately, the movie also feels like it is five years long.

In the April 20th theatrical release Darling Companion, Beth (Diane Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway on a wintry day in Denver.  Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph (Kevin Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal.  When Joseph loses the dog after their daughter’s (Elisabeth Moss) wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, Beth, distraught and angry with Joseph, enlists the help of the few remaining guests (Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Mark Duplass) and a mysterious woman (Ayelet Zurer) in a frantic search.

Over the course of several days searching, the emotional and physical toll starts affecting everyone as their mountain adventure takes them in unexpected directions – comic, harrowing, sometimes deeply emotional and, ultimately, towards a new understanding of love.

We’re giving away the movie poster, autographed by Kevin Kline, Lawrence Kasdan and Meg Kasdan. Oh, and Kasey the dog! Enter to win now!

The Lady: A Luc Besson Movie Like None Other

April 13th, 2012
the-lady-michelle-yeoh

From the director of Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita comes… a political drama about Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of democracy in repressive Burma? Luc Besson somehow took time out of his busy schedule of writing bad action movies to make the heartfelt drama The Lady, which, while not groundbreaking, exceeds expectations.

My Week with Marilyn

Michelle Williams earned another Oscar nomination for her turn as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. She didn’t stand a fighting chance, but that in no way diminishes the understated performance she puts on display amidst the likes of Kenneth Branagh (also nominated) and Judi Dench. The movie was released to DVD and Blu-ray yesterday.

My Week with Marilyn Movie Review

February 20th, 2012
my-week-with-marilyn

Michelle Williams turns in another terrific performance as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, an alluring little film that is entertaining, but ultimately unremarkable. The movie will appeal to those more interested in lighthearted romantic dramas than serious Oscar fare.

this-means-war

It’s the decision every man faces in life: do you bug the home of the woman you’re dating? Even more common: do you or do you not spy on the woman while she’s going on a date with your best friend and coworker, using a Predator Drone aircraft? These are the quandaries on-screen pals Chris Pine and Tom Hardy face as they both attempt to court a very sexy looking Reese Witherspoon in the new romantic comedy This Means War.

50/50: A Funny Movie About Cancer

February 6th, 2012
50-50

Cancer is no laughing matter. Life, however, is. In 50/50, which can best be described as a “cancer comedy”, director Jonathan Levine and writer Will Reiser prove that disease can be just as humorous as it is frightening. 50/50 is one of the best movies of 2011.

Better Late Than Never: Midnight in Paris Movie Review

January 13th, 2012
midnight-in-paris

In the very Woody Allen-esque comedy-drama Midnight in Paris, coincidentally written and directed by Woody Allen, Owen Wilson plays an awkward, curious man visiting, coincidentally, Paris, who would have been played by Woody Allen if the actor-director hadn’t finally figured out that audiences don’t want to see him flirting with young women anymore. Hailed as one of Allen’s finest movies in years, Midnight in Paris is a well done little movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

Like Crazy: The Most Romantic Movie of 2011

January 12th, 2012
like-crazy

Love. It can be wonderful, it can be maddening. Especially if your girlfriend lives in England and is barred from entering the United States due to a visa violation. Damn illegal British immigrants. Trying to take our jobs, use our resources. And they talk funny. Despite that, Like Crazy is one of the most romantic movies to come along in a long time.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

Beginners Movie Review: Why You Should See It

December 15th, 2011
beginners

Your mom’s dead. I’m gay and have a young male lover. Oh, and I have cancer. Not exactly what you expect or want to hear from your 75-year-old father. Ewan McGregor stars as Oliver, a man who faces these scenarios and more in Beginners, an extremely good romantic drama that also stars Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent.
