Beginners Movie Review: Why You Should See It

December 15th, 2011
beginners

Your mom’s dead. I’m gay and have a young male lover. Oh, and I have cancer. Not exactly what you expect or want to hear from your 75-year-old father. Ewan McGregor stars as Oliver, a man who faces these scenarios and more in Beginners, an extremely good romantic drama that also stars Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent.

Circumstance Movie Review

December 13th, 2011
circumstance

An Iranian-based film hardly seems the setting for a sexy romantic drama about two teenage girls who fall in love with one another, but Circumstance relishes its taboo topic, the very camerawork oozing with sensuality. Circumstance is a beautiful and alluring film, one that works on many levels, painting a picture of repression while also focusing on a non-traditional love triangle.

The Art of Getting By Movie Review

December 12th, 2011
art-of-getting-by

Charlie from the chocolate factory falls in love with Nancy Drew but is too much of a pussy to admit it in the uninspired romantic drama The Art of Getting By, which is now on DVD for those interested in watching an indie-like movie that looks and feels like dozens of other indie-like movies.

Mila Kunis, Sex, and a Friends With Benefits Movie Review

December 5th, 2011
friends-with-benefits

Sex. Mila Kunis. Sex. Body double nudity. We can pretend. Mila Kunis. Thankfully, Friends and Benefits is that and more. A self-aware romantic comedy that also stars Justin Timberlake, Friends and Benefits is a surprisingly entertaining movie that works more often than not, even though it falls victim to the one rule it doesn’t break: predictability.

Welcome to Bellflower, the intoxicating and unique drama from first-time writer/director/star Evan Glodell.

Top Five Rainy Day Films

October 10th, 2011
rainy-day-movies

It’s raining in Los Angeles.  This is rare enough that every time it happens all my friends change their Facebook status and everyone forgets how to drive.  Which is annoying.  But you know what isn’t annoying?  Curling up on the couch and watching the perfect rainy day movie.  So, in the spirit of autumn weather reaching LA (however brief it may be) here are my top five rainy day girly films.

Skateland Movie Review: At Least Ashley Greene Is In It

September 1st, 2011
skateland

Not to be confused with Stakeland, a 2011 vampire flick, Skateland – as in “land of the roller skates” – debuted on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, giving most audiences their first chance to see the coming-of-age drama. Those who do bother to see it will be treated to a moderately engaging if ultimately inconsequential tale that features the lovely Ashley Greene.

Jumping the Broom Movie Review

August 9th, 2011
jumping-the-broom

May 6, 2011 was a wonderful day. That was the day Jumping the Broom was released, which meant I no longer had to see its eye-rolling trailer before every movie. The romantic dramedy is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD, and, surprisingly, it’s watchable. But not much more than that.

Miranda July’s The Future: Not One to Visit

August 4th, 2011

Review by Nathan Samdahl (C)

In Miranda July’s sophomore feature The Future, the director assembles an eccentric cast and story that is a mixed bag of successes and misfires.  While brimming with creativity, The Future feels forced in many ways, trying to incorporate elements of magical realism and a collection of offbeat moments that prove more distracting than anything else.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. Movie Review

July 29th, 2011
crazy-stupid-love

I’m not good with women. For whatever reason, I didn’t get that gene that allows me to undress a scorching hot Hollywood actress with a line of dialogue and a Ryan Gosling squint. I’ll keep trying, but in the mean time I can live vicariously through Crazy, Stupid, Love., a funny and lighthearted romantic comedy starring Steve Carrell and the Gosling.

Take Me Home Tonight Movie Review

July 19th, 2011
take-me-home-tonight-poster

Overlooked and underappreciated, the romantic comedy/party flick Take Me Home Tonight earned only $7 million in the United States, despite a talented cast and an entertaining – albeit predictable – story. While no award winner, Take Me Home Tonight is a fun, lighthearted throwback to the coming-of-age movies of the 1980′s.

The Ledge: The Best Movie of the Summer?

June 20th, 2011
ledge-liv-tyler

I have a general rule. If a movie is coming to On Demand before or shortly after its theatrical release, it isn’t worth watching. If the studio isn’t willing to promote or release what appears to be a mainstream film to a large audience, then I’ll assume it isn’t fit for the big screen. Thankfully, I make exceptions to this rule on occasion – and in the case of The Ledge, the exception pays off.

No Strings Attached, No Thank You

June 2nd, 2011

Natalie Portman. Friend with benefits. Yes, please. Ashton Kutcher, same arrangement. I’ll pass. The same goes for No Strings Attached, a harmless but utterly forgettable romantic comedy starring the Oscar winner and winning replacement for Charlie Sheen.

The Yellow Handkerchief Movie Review

May 26th, 2011
yellow-handkerchief

I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again: as soon as you get past Kristen Stewart’s involvement in Twilight, her choice in projects is excellent. The Yellow Handkerchief, a drama which also stars William Hurt, Maria Bello and Eddie Redmayne, is yet another one of Stewart’s criminally overlooked films, a well made, superbly acted story few have seen.

The Ledge Might Be Worth Jumping For

May 11th, 2011
ledge

Would you be considered suicidal if you don’t want to kill yourself but are going to jump off a building nonetheless? In the upcoming thriller The Ledge, a young man named Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) has an affair with a beautiful woman (Liv Tyler) – but love can be killer. When her fundamentalist husband (Patrick Wilson) discovers them, he forces Gavin to make a choice: sacrifice his own life, or that of the woman he loves.

That’s just not a very nice thing to do.
