May 15th, 2012
chronicle

Three Seattle teenagers develop super powers and do wonderful things with them, like scaring little girls and playing practical jokes on unsuspecting strangers, in the entertaining but far from great sci-fi action film Chronicle. Oh, and one gets corrupted by his newfound powers and takes it out on the Emerald City and all those who stand in his way.

Seattle Chronicles: Six Classic Seattle Movies

May 14th, 2012
chronicle-space-needle

As movie viewers, we are most accustomed to blockbuster movie settings like the sprawling landscapes of the Midwest or the bright city lights of New York and Los Angeles. In fact, the superhero genre has even gone a step further by giving birth to faux cities like Metropolis and Gotham City. But up in the Pacific Northwest lies beautiful but less-popular Seattle, a gem that has played host to many popular flicks.

The Avengers Shatters Box Office Records

May 6th, 2012
avengers-black-widow

Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s steel, the Hulk’s smash, Captain America’s patriotism and Black Widow’s cleavage combined for quite a wallop over the weekend as The Avengers opened to $200.3 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to BoxOffice.com. That blows past the $169.2 record held by last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and sets a whole new benchmark for what defines a blockbuster.

A $200 million opening!

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new movie trailer for its upcoming action epic The Dark Knight Rises, and it is… epic. April 19th, 2012
worst-movie-trailers

It may be early in the year to be making a list like this, but we are only 1/4 of the way through 2012 and most of the previews I have seen for summer blockbusters have been lame to say the least. Lets take a look at this year’s worst movie trailers so far:

avengers-black-widow

You probably haven’t heard, but there’s this small indie film called The Avengers debuting in a few theaters on May 4. Yeah. It’ll probably make a few million dollars if it’s lucky. Its overseas gross will be pretty paltry. Nonetheless, this entity called Marvel seems to be obsessed with marketing this movie, to the point
where they’ve released four new movie clips from the superhero film – and two new featurettes.

‘Lockout’ is Funny, but It Isn’t a Comedy

April 13th, 2012

Luc Besson sat down one day and came up with an original idea: The President’s daughter is going to be taken hostage by a bunch of prisoners in a futuristic space prison. And then the President is going to send in one lone man, a crude, unlikable guy who cares about no one but himself, but who can kick some major convict ass. Lockout is "based upon an original idea by Luc Besson", but when did an original idea mean taking Escape from New York, making it stupid and changing the location to space?

The Darkest Hour Movie Review

April 10th, 2012
darkest-hour

Proof that science fiction needs more than the mere combination of "aliens" and "invasion", The Darkest Hour is a dull affair that deserved a Friday night premiere on the SyFy Channel, not the theatrical treatment it received. Its home video debut marks an excellent time not to watch this movie, however.

A Very Untimely ‘In Time’ Movie Review

April 5th, 2012
in-time

Justin Timberlake is a man who lives just minutes from death in In Time, a sci-fi thriller that is high on concept but low on thrills. From the director of Gattaca, but also S1m0ne and Lord of War, In Time works at a rudimentary level but struggles with two key issues: it isn’t very suspenseful, and it makes no Goddamned sense.

Better Late Than Never: The Hunger Games Review

April 4th, 2012
hunger-games

The Hunger Games. The debut for a movie – ever – in the month of March. A movie that is based on a young adult book that is thankfully much, much better than Twilight. A movie that has received glowing reviews. A movie that, unfortunately, fails to live up to its full potential.

Hunger Games On Pace for Record Box Office Weekend

March 24th, 2012

The war between Twilight and Harry Potter is over. The war between Harry Potter and The Hunger Games has begun.

For years the debate raged as to whether Twilight or Harry Potter was the better franchise, despite the unequivocal facts indicating that the latter was the better franchise. Critically praised, based on critically acclaimed books and thematically more powerful, Harry Potter also earned significantly more money than the Twilight saga, which was ravaged by those outside the preteen female demographic.

Watch the New Full-Length Prometheus Trailer

March 17th, 2012
prometheus

Ridley Scott is returning to the sci-fi genre for the first time in decades with the highly anticipated movie Prometheus. You may recall that Scott is responsible for such classics as Alien and Blade Runner. In fact, Prometheus was originally intended to be a prequel to Alien, though it has evolved into something that appears to be much more epic in scope, set in the same universe but not necessarily featuring those same pesky acid-bleeding, mouth-in-mouth-in-mouth aliens.
