Three Seattle teenagers develop super powers and do wonderful things with them, like scaring little girls and playing practical jokes on unsuspecting strangers, in the entertaining but far from great sci-fi action film Chronicle. Oh, and one gets corrupted by his newfound powers and takes it out on the Emerald City and all those who stand in his way.

Most people think Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon. Most people are wrong. Like dead wrong. NASA, those scheming, secretive bastards, sent another spaceship to our orbiting little sister with the intent to explore a nearby crater and the unreported landing site of a Soviet craft. Apollo 18 gives a firsthand look at found footage from the mission.

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

Stephen Soderbergh’s Contagion was one of the better movies of the fall, well executed and surgical in its realistic portrayal of how a massive outbreak would spread throughout the world and cause incredible panic. Contagion, which stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cottilard and Laurence Fishburne, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, and we’re giving away two free copies of the Blu-ray combo pack, with an Ultra Violet copy.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra sucked. There, I said it. And no, I’ve never said it before. Or predicted it long before it was released. Between the terrible special effects, the ludicrous plot, the sandpaper acting and the sheer awfulness of it all, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was the epitome of suckage, if suckage were a word.

There are a lot of good movies to choose from right now. In theaters, several are competing for box office dollars and Oscar glory. On DVD, all the big summer hits have been released. Oh, what to choose?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, one of the biggest surprises of the summer, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. A box office and critical hit, the excellent primate film is shockingly alluring, even realistic, with a nearly speechless performance by Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape.

I was nine years old when The Rocketeer flew into theaters, and I loved it. Flying men, lots of action and Nazis… what more could a little boy ask for? Thankfully, 20 years later, The Rocketeer stands the test of time surprisingly well. The Disney movie is just as enjoyable now as it was then, especially since I appreciate watching a young Jennifer Connelly strut around in a sexy white dress.

Columbia Pictures has released a cool new movie poster for its upcoming movie The Amazing Spider-Man, which reboots the comic book franchise with a new cast including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans. Garfield will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Stone will play love interest Gwen Stacy and Ifans will portray Dr. Curt Connors, who becomes the mutated villain The Lizard.

Aliens. Explosions. Lots of special effects. It’s Battleship, 2012′s response to Transformers. A new movie trailer for the upcoming Peter Berg film is now online, and it practically pleads with the audience to go see it because it bears some resemblance to the Michael Bay franchise, going as far as to say “From HASBRO, the company that brought you Transformers.”

There’s another world out there. Just like ours. You’re on it. Doing the exact same thing you’re doing now. Reading this review that the other me just wrote. Reading about Another Earth, the intriguing new sci-fi drama now out on Blu-ray and DVD.
