Review: Does ‘Les Miserables’ Live Up to the Hype?

December 22nd, 2012
les-miserables-cosette

Heavily hyped and surrounded by deafening buzz, Les Misérables serves as Tom Hooper’s follow up to the Oscar-winning drama The King’s Speech and as this year’s sole mainstream musical. It is considered a heavyweight in the Best Picture category… but it doesn’t deserve it. Well done, beautifully acted and at times explosive, Les Misérables left me wanting more. Not more of the movie, but a more emotional connection.

A Very Untimely ‘In Time’ Movie Review

April 5th, 2012
in-time

Justin Timberlake is a man who lives just minutes from death in In Time, a sci-fi thriller that is high on concept but low on thrills. From the director of Gattaca, but also S1m0ne and Lord of War, In Time works at a rudimentary level but struggles with two key issues: it isn’t very suspenseful, and it makes no Goddamned sense.

Red Riding Hood Movie Review

July 26th, 2011
red-riding-hood

From the director of Twilight comes Red Riding Hood, another fantasy-based romantic thriller that unfortunately lacks magic, intrigue or anything of real value. So in that regard, it’s exactly like Twilight. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Red Riding Hood is an instantly forgettable movie.

Letters to Juliet Movie Review

September 18th, 2010

Amanda Seyfried stars in her second romantic drama of 2010, but thankfully Letters to Juliet isn’t based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. The movie is still utterly predictable, but focuses on a more interesting subplot than audiences are used to.

The previews for Letters to Juliet made the movie out to be incredibly bland and cheesy, but it avoids most of the typical pitfalls associated with the genre – while still delivering the romance woman want. The movie stars Seyfried as Claire, an aspiring writer who goes on a vacation to  Italy with her fiance (Gael Garcia Bernal). While he gets distracted by Italian food (he owns a restaurant), Claire meets the secretaries of  Juliet, a group of women who respond to relationship advice letters left at the wall of a famous later, and finds a love letter written 50 years ago…

Chloe Striptease: A Blu-Ray Movie Review

July 15th, 2010

I want Amanda Seyfried’s agent. Just a few years ago, the actress was just “the daughter on HBO’s Big Love” or “the really dumb one from Mean Girls“, sort of cute, not really scorching hot. But Mamma Mia that career later and she’s received rave reviews and been in a couple moderate hits; suddenly, she’s a leading actress who’s recognized the world over. And she’s somehow become significantly more attractive.

Chloe Movie Review

March 27th, 2010

Amanda Seyfried in ChloeChloe, the newest entry from writer/director Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Adoration), follows in the dramatic footsteps of his past films, bringing to the screen deeply developed and observed characters like few others can.  While not on the same level as The Sweet Hereafter, Egoyan’s strongest film, Chloe presents a fairly common premise packed full of character nuance, which sustains the film.  For instance, the character of Chloe (played brilliantly by Amanda Seyfried, who gets better and more attractive with each film she is in) is on the surface a professional escort hired by Julianne Moore to determine if Moore’s husband (Liam Neeson) is cheating on her.  However, through Chloe’s minute mannerisms such as tiny smiles here and there, it is apparent that much more is going on below the surface.  Her character eschews predictability (at least until towards the end), instead leaving the audience always a bit off kilter, wondering what will happen next.

Jennifer’s Body Movie Review – Now on DVD/Blu-Ray

January 2nd, 2010

Megan Fox in Jennifer's BodyFrom Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno, comes a movie much more fitting for her name: Jennifer’s Body, a sharp-tongued horror-comedy about an attractive cheerleader – Megan Fox – who is possessed by a flesh-hungry demon. Though not perfect, Jennifer’s Body is a slick, witty and at times creepy film that any horror fan, especially those of the male species, will enjoy.
