The Tomb: A Throwback to the Eighties Action Movie?

April 1st, 2013
the-tomb-sylvestor-stallone

The 1980s is considered by many as the golden era of action movies, and introduced us to such names as the T-101 Terminator, Rocky Balboa, John Rambo, John Matrix, Cobra, and the Predator. It’s safe to say I was, and still am, a huge fan of these 80s action movies and heroes. They were so over the top and as a result the larger than life stars who played in these action movies have become some of my all-time favorites.

The Last Stand Review: Arnold is Back!

January 17th, 2013

In his first starring role since he became the Governator, Arnold is undeniably back in The Last Stand, a deliciously silly action movie that works in all the right ways. Though the perfect Austrian is older and creakier than ever, he hasn’t lost his charm or physical presence – and most importantly, his ability to entertain.

Review: The Expendables 2 Relies on Low Expectations

November 19th, 2012
expendables-2

Old people just don’t know when to quit. Sylvester Stallone and the rest of his washed-up gang are back in The Expendables 2, a dumb, silly sequel to a movie that needed to be dumber and sillier. The first Expendables was a big, fat disappointment for a multitude of reasons. The Expendables 2 proves that low expectations can pay dividends. Sort of.

Judgment Day has yet to come (though the Republic National Convention might be the latest sign of our impending doom), but Warner Brothers is giving fans yet another opportunity to spend their hard-earned cash to watch the world perish in a fiery blaze, and buy movies they already own.

August 17th, 2012

Oh boy, is Arnold Schwarzenegger back. Not only does he make his post-governator debut in The Expendables 2 this weekend, but, not at all coincidentally, Lionsgate has premiered the first trailer for his 2013 action movie The Last Stand, where Schwarzenegger plays a sheriff who becomes the last roadblock for a pack of violent criminals.

Lots of people die. The end.

Arnold, Willis and Stallone in First Expendables 2 Poster!

November 19th, 2011
expendables-2-poster

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. They briefly appeared together on screen in 2010, but Schwarzenegger was still the Governator at the time and Bruce Willis had better things to do. Flash ahead two years and The Expendables 2 is promising more of the three actors, not just cameos. Time will tell, but let’s repeat those names once more. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. It’s like a sweet wine teasing the palate.

The movie also stars other “reputable” action stars like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. For action fans, that’s a pretty awesome cast… even better than the first one.

Terminator/The Usual Suspects: The Books?

May 23rd, 2011
terminator-usual-suspects

The Terminator and The Usual Suspects are very similar in many ways. People die in both of them. And they are regarded as two of the best movies in modern cinema. One is about a cyborg sent from the future to assassinate the mother of humanity’s last chance, the other about a gimpy Kevin Spacey and a mysterious underworld figure. Very similar indeed.

Both movies were recently released by MGM and 20th Century Fox in book format. Book format!

Blu-Ray Review: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition

July 3rd, 2010

The Robert Rodriguez-produced “reboot” of the Predator franchise – Predators – opens this coming Friday, and it was inevitable that 20th Century Fox would unleash an updated edition of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Predator to milk a few extra dollars out of willing cinephiles. This new Blu-Ray edition, titled The Ultimate Hunter Edition, doesn’t provide many if any new bonus features, but it does have a few things going for it.

Arnold to Return to Terminator for Salvation

April 8th, 2009

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 4There’s not much to say here: MTV Movie Blogs held an interview with actor Terry Crews who confirmed that the Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger will indeed have a cameo in the upcoming action flick Terminator Salvation. Rumors had all but confirmed this already, but this is the surest sign so far.

Arnold will also cameo in The Expendables, the Sylvestor Stallone-directed movie that also involves Crews.

I don’t care about that movie as much, but let me say this: Terminator Salvation looks badass. Absolutely badass. From the previews, it makes Transformers look like a walk in the park. I just watched the latest preview again during my viewing of the Rescue Me season premiere… I could watch it a dozen more times. The music is pitch perfect. The movie itself looks depressing: just the way I like ‘em.
