best-action-movies-2012

What makes the best action movie? Is it balls-to-the-wall chaos? Meditative stories with bursts of adrenaline? A smart, twisting plot? The answer, as evidenced by this list that represents the best action movies of 2012, is clear: there is no single formula to making a great action movie.

Blu-Ray Review: Savages

November 13th, 2012
savages-oliver-stone

After a lackluster theatrical run that found the $45-million Savages earning only $77 million worldwide – hardly a profitable venture after marketing and print costs are taken into account – the Oliver Stone action-thriller tears its way onto Blu-ray and DVD.

Oliver Stone Returns to Form with ‘Savages’

July 6th, 2012
savages-blake-lively

Look at Oliver Stone’s career from one side and you see a string of celebrated classics. Platoon. Wall Street. Born on the Fourth of July. The Doors. JFK. Natural Born Killers. Impressive. Look at his 21st century career, however, and it paints a different picture. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. W. World Trade Center. Alexander. A couple mediocre films. A few disasters.

Universal Pictures recently released the movie trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming action-thriller Savages, about two seemingly peaceful drug dealers who go on a rampage when their shared girlfriend (played by scorching-as-always Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

January 9th, 2012
most-disappointing-movies-2011

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

Warner Brothers and DC Comics seek to launch a new franchise this weekend in the form of Green Lantern, a special-effects extravaganza starring Ryan Reynolds. Boasting a staggering production and marketing budget of $300 million, the movie is an aggressive and risky move for the new DC Comics film division.

Movie News – Blake Lively, Star Trek 2 and Sam Mendes

January 10th, 2010

Blake Lively is Carol Ferris in Green LanternIt’s been a while since I reported on movie news, but I’m back – at least for this week. I have plenty of “top ten” lists to write over the coming months, but figured this would be an easy thing to do while watching the Patriots get their asses kicked by the Ravens. Here are some of the biggest movie news stories of 2010 so far:

  • The sequel to the Star Trek reboot has been given a release date – June 29, 2012.
  • Blake Lively has been cast as Carol Ferris, Hal Jordan’s love interest in Green Lantern. The sexy “Gossip Girl” star is hot, but does she have the acting chops to handle a big blockbuster such as this? Time will tell.
