My ‘Precious’ Blu-Ray Experience: Not As Good the Second Time

March 6th, 2010

Mo'Nique in PreciousBack in November, there was a clear front runner for Best Picture. The movie was Precious, or more officially Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, an utterly depressing tale of physical, mental and sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, down syndrome, AIDS, rape and obesity. After watching the movie in theaters, I described it as “one of the most satisfying films of the year” and “one of the best movies of 2009, if not the best.”

Blu-Ray Review: Surrogates Take Over On 1/26

January 21st, 2010

SurrogatesBruce Willis wants to save the world! Again! Surrogates, his latest action-thriller, debuts on Blu-Ray and DVD on January 26, 2010. More of a mystery-thriller than an action film, the movie offers up a cool concept with only decent execution, resulting in an entertaining but underwhelming film.

Halloween II Movie Review

January 13th, 2010

Laurie Strode in Halloween IISomeone put the leash back on Rob Zombie. Now. Halloween II, the sequel to the hit Rob Zombie remake, is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, which means millions of horror fans are going to invest in one of the worst movies of 2009.

Zombie’s first Halloween movie was surprisingly good. He apparently got off the acid for a few months and directed the most grounded movie of his career, delivering an authentic psychological thriller coupled with a legitimate slasher flick. The Weinsteins apparently got lucky, because Halloween II is a noisy, obnoxious and trippy disaster of epic proportions.

Jennifer’s Body Movie Review – Now on DVD/Blu-Ray

January 2nd, 2010

Megan Fox in Jennifer's BodyFrom Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno, comes a movie much more fitting for her name: Jennifer’s Body, a sharp-tongued horror-comedy about an attractive cheerleader – Megan Fox – who is possessed by a flesh-hungry demon. Though not perfect, Jennifer’s Body is a slick, witty and at times creepy film that any horror fan, especially those of the male species, will enjoy.

Mike Judge’s Extract: A Blu-Ray Bonus Features Review

December 23rd, 2009

Mila Kunis in ExtractThis should be quick and painless. Extract, Mike Judge’s latest comedy, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray, just in time for Christmas. As a harmless stocking stuffer, Extract has enough to satisfy: high-concept jokes, some shenanigans and Mila Kunis looking really, really good in flannel. The movie bears some similarities to Office Space, which, unfortunately, results in it paling in comparison to Judge’s masterpiece, but it is funny in its own right – as long as you like Mike Judge movies. The comedy isn’t for everyone, but it’s well worth a viewing. Purchasing? Perhaps not.

Is the Inglourious Basterds Blu-Ray Inglourious?

December 13th, 2009

Diane Kruger in Inglourious BasterdsQuentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, the hit Nazi war movie that stars Brad Pitt and a variety of other, lesser known actors of no less talent, arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray this Tuesday, December 15, 2009.

Inglourious Basterds works on many levels, most notably that you don’t know what is going to happen. The Basterds – a group of angry American Jews (and one insane Nazi defector) who travel around Europe torturing and killing Nazis – are only one part of a larger story, and are the film’s least developed characters.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas Review

November 26th, 2009

A Very Sunny ChristmasMac, Charlie, Dennis, Dee and Frank head straight to DVD and Blu-Ray with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas, a mildly funny, 45-minute incarnation of the off-color FX television series.

Now available in stores, A Very Sunny Christmas has the irreverent characters realizing that their holiday traditions are based on false assumptions (one thought it was customary to sneak into other people’s homes and steal presents, while another assumed that all of the Santas that visited his mom and paid her money to visit her bedroom was standard practices) and trying to convince their step-father that over the years he completely ruined Christmas for them.

Fight Club: 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray Review

November 17th, 2009

Fight Club Blu-RayFirst rule about Fight Club: Talk about Fight Club.

Brad Pitt and Ed Norton return to the small screen in a 10th Anniversary Edition of the cult classic Fight Club, which is directed by David Fincher. This is the first time the infamous film has been released on Blu-Ray. While I’m not as huge of an advocate of the movie or its ending as many fans, Fight Club is still a movie that should be in a guy’s collection – and what better time to add it than the holidays?

Kevin Smith: 3-Movie Collection Blu-Ray Review

November 15th, 2009

Kevin Smith Blu-RayKevin Smith. Not many directors have consistently delivered as many entertaining and hilarious films as he has, though he evokes a love-him-or-hate-him reaction from many (my mom shakes her head disapprovingly in his general direction). Let’s look at his movies: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, Clerks II and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He has quietly (or not so quietly) built up an incredibly strong resume.

Blu-Ray Review: Say Anything 20th Anniversary Edition

November 12th, 2009

say-anything-blu-rayThe boombox is back! Say Anything, one of the quintessential romantic comedies of the 1980′s, is coming to Blu-Ray in an all-new 20th Anniversary Edition.

Say Anything marks the directorial debut of Cameron Crowe and stars John Cusack as a young man named Lloyd Dobler, who’s one mission in life is to date Diane Court (Ione Skye). The movie looks at the rise and fall of their relationship in a very sincere way, which sets it apart from a lot of the teen comedies that were to follow.

Blu-Ray Review: Monsters, Inc.

November 7th, 2009

Monsters, Inc. Blu-Ray ReleaseJohn Goodman are back and Billy Crystal are back… on Blu-Ray! OK, so Monsters, Inc.‘s release on Blu-Ray isn’t that exciting since we’ve now determined that it really isn’t worth upgrading from DVD to Blu-Ray, but at least be excited that the beloved Disney-Pixar movie now comes with some great new special features. And some not-so-great ones.
