A Silver Linings Playbook DVD Review

May 1st, 2013
silver-linings-playbook

How do I start this review? How do I write the rest of it? The subject is Silver Linings Playbook, but not the movie. This review is about the DVD, and DVD reviews can only go so far. I’ve never been interested in going on and on about how good the video quality or audio clarity is, because after all, 99% of people don’t give a damn, especially when the movie is a drama-comedy.

Review: ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’

March 29th, 2013
place-beyond-the-pines-ryan-gosling

What makes a son like his father? Is a son doomed to make his father’s mistakes? These questions are explored in the sweeping yet personal epic from director Derek Cianfrance The Place Beyond the Pines, which reunites him with his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling. At times captivating, at other times longwinded, The Place Beyond the Pines is the first good drama of the year. Unfortunately, it’s also far from perfect.

Derek Cianfrance: Ryan Gosling a Criminal Mastermind?

March 27th, 2013
derek-cianfrance-place-beyond-the-pines

I had the opportunity to sit down with writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who has a new film coming out this Friday called The Place Beyond the Pines, which stars his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling as well as Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta. While I only had a few minutes with him, I asked him about his motivations to make the film, what it’s like to work with Ryan Gosling and how both men are criminal masterminds at heart.

February 22nd, 2013
best-performances-2012

The Academy Awards separates its acting categories by sex and screen time. The Golden Globes goes as far as to separate them by genre. I say screw that. Here are the 20 best performances of 2012, regardless of sex, genre or species.

The 12 Funniest Movies of 2012

January 19th, 2013
funniest-movies-2012

There are all kinds of comedies, some more critic friendly than others. Stupid comedies… critics hate those. Dramatic comedies… boy, do critics eat those up. But what really matters when it comes to comedies? I have very specific criteria: a good comedy has to make me laugh.

Bradley Cooper plays a mentally ill man who lives with his parents and Jennifer Lawrence a troubled widow in the deliciously entertaining Silver Linings Playbook, a drama-comedy that slowly and unexpectedly transforms into one of the sexiest and most romantic stories of the year.

Review: ‘The Words’ is Good, Until It Isn’t

September 7th, 2012
the-words

The Words is a movie of many stories, of a story within a story within a story, of layers, each different from the next with varying degrees of quality, at times hypnotic, other times drawn out, well acted by some, horribly by others. It also has an ending so bad it’s worth calling out in the opening paragraph of this movie review.

The Hangover Part II Movie Review

May 28th, 2011
hangover-2-poster

To start off this movie review in the same way that countless others have, the wolfpack is back in The Hangover Part II! This go-around, Phil, Stu and Alan wake up in Bangkok, shaved, tattooed and missing Stu’s soon-to-be brother-in-law. The expected hijinks ensue – and by “expected” I mean exactly the same – but The Hangover Part II is still an entertaining, albeit not nearly as funny follow-up to the hit comedy.

The Hangover: Part II Movie Poster

March 28th, 2011
hangover-2-poster

The first movie poster for the highly anticipated sequel to The Hangover has arrived. The poster is pretty amusing and features Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis in a not-so-good state. Cooper looks half-dead; Helms has his Mike Tyson tattoo and, well, Galifianakis has a shaved head. Oh, and Justin Bartha has been replaced by a monkey.

The wolfpack is back.
