Review: It Was Not ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’

June 4th, 2013
good-day-to-die-hard

It was not a good day to die hard. John McClane has returned, but the yip and the ki-yay and everything that follows has been bludgeoned from the aging character. The latest Die Hard movie lacks the energy, the fun and the cleverness of the previous entries, a disappointing addition to the typically entertaining franchise.

The Sad Decline of M. Night Shyamalan Movies

June 1st, 2013
sixth-sense

Well, it appears we have our first outright disaster of 2013. Other movies have disappointed this year (remember a certain comedy starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey? Neither do we), but After Earth is the first summer blockbuster of the year to get absolutely ravaged by critics – and early indications suggest that the $130 million film is on pace for a $20+ million opening. With plenty of other action movies still going strong and more on the way, this could end up being Will Smith’s biggest dud since 1999′s Wild Wild West.

Review: Well, ‘G.I. Joe’ is Better Than the Last One

March 28th, 2013
gi-joe-retaliation

You know you’re in trouble when the best line of dialogue in an entire movie is a Jay Z quote. Then again, I don’t know if I was in trouble. The new G.I. Joe: Retaliation is leaps and bounds better than its predecessor, with fast-paced action sequences and the charisma of The Rock pulsing through every scene, but it’s also absurd, absurdly absurd and fucking ridiculously absurd. Whether that’s good or bad… I just don’t know.

The Best Action Movies of 2012

January 21st, 2013
best-action-movies-2012

What makes the best action movie? Is it balls-to-the-wall chaos? Meditative stories with bursts of adrenaline? A smart, twisting plot? The answer, as evidenced by this list that represents the best action movies of 2012, is clear: there is no single formula to making a great action movie.

January 2nd, 2013
best-movies-2012

2012 was a banner year for movies. From massive blockbusters to highly anticipated adaptations – and movies that came out of nowhere – the year treated audiences with a surprisingly strong selection in practically every genre. As in any year, not every film delivered (ask Taylor Kitsch), but also, a few stand out among the rest. Here are the top ten best movies of 2012:

Review: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Shines, But Not as Brightly

November 26th, 2012
moonrise-kingdom

A boy flees his Khaki Scouts troop, a girl runs away from her parents, and an island sheriff and scout troop leader put into effect a massive manhunt to find them in Wes Anderson’s offbest comedy Moonrise Kingdom, an original and amusing, if not ultimately unremarkable, return to form for the director.

Review: The Expendables 2 Relies on Low Expectations

November 19th, 2012
expendables-2

Old people just don’t know when to quit. Sylvester Stallone and the rest of his washed-up gang are back in The Expendables 2, a dumb, silly sequel to a movie that needed to be dumber and sillier. The first Expendables was a big, fat disappointment for a multitude of reasons. The Expendables 2 proves that low expectations can pay dividends. Sort of.

Review: ‘Looper’ is Fun, Smart and Unpredictable

September 30th, 2012
looper-bruce-willis

Bruce Willis squares off against a Bruce Willis-esque Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper, a time bending action-thriller that not only exceeds its lofty expectations, but serves up one of the best sci-fi stories of the last decade.

G.I. Joe 2 Trailer Suggests Better Times Ahead

December 16th, 2011
gi-joe-2-the-rock

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra sucked. There, I said it. And no, I’ve never said it before. Or predicted it long before it was released. Between the terrible special effects, the ludicrous plot, the sandpaper acting and the sheer awfulness of it all, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was the epitome of suckage, if suckage were a word.

Arnold, Willis and Stallone in First Expendables 2 Poster!

November 19th, 2011
expendables-2-poster

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. They briefly appeared together on screen in 2010, but Schwarzenegger was still the Governator at the time and Bruce Willis had better things to do. Flash ahead two years and The Expendables 2 is promising more of the three actors, not just cameos. Time will tell, but let’s repeat those names once more. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. It’s like a sweet wine teasing the palate.

The movie also stars other “reputable” action stars like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. For action fans, that’s a pretty awesome cast… even better than the first one.

The Six Best Bruce Willis Movies

October 13th, 2010

Bruce Willis is one of those actors who’s hard to hate. He may not see an Oscar in his life, but he’s earned the respect of any legitimate action fan. He’s had his fair share of bad movies, but even in those he’s the best part. He can be a bad ass and likable at the same time. Look at Die Hard with a Vengeance. The Fifth Element. Hell, even Surrogates. Bad ass, but likable.

Bruce Willis is one of many big names starring in the ensemble action-comedy Red, which opens this Friday. This seems like the perfect time to reflect back on the venerable actor’s career and highlight his best movies.

Blu-Ray Review: Surrogates Take Over On 1/26

January 21st, 2010

SurrogatesBruce Willis wants to save the world! Again! Surrogates, his latest action-thriller, debuts on Blu-Ray and DVD on January 26, 2010. More of a mystery-thriller than an action film, the movie offers up a cool concept with only decent execution, resulting in an entertaining but underwhelming film.
