Review: ‘Arthur Newman’ Isn’t a Total Bust

April 25th, 2013
arthur-newman

Movies about losers tend to fall into one of two categories.  Either the characters are "lovable losers" who are able to elicit the viewer’s sympathy and desire to see the characters grow and change for the better; or the characters are so frustrating to watch that you want to grab them by the shoulders and shake them, yelling for them to snap out of it.  Unfortunately, Arthur Newman falls into that latter category.

Bruce Willis squares off against a Bruce Willis-esque Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper, a time bending action-thriller that not only exceeds its lofty expectations, but serves up one of the best sci-fi stories of the last decade.

Late Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

August 20th, 2012
salmon-fishing-in-the-yemen

From the director of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat and The Shipping News comes Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, a low-key romantic drama about two people who find chemistry through the oddest of avenues: a project to introduce salmon fishing into the deserts of Yemen. Hence the title.

A man and a woman meet, fall in love, get engaged. The next step is obvious. Obvious, but not easy. Between career opportunities and unexpected family situations, the initiation process to their next stage in life – the wedding – keeps getting pushed back, a victim of life’s little ironies and twists. The Five-Year Engagement looks at the ups and downs of their relationship, capturing the funny moments along the way. Unfortunately, the movie also feels like it is five years long.

The Young Victoria Movie Review

April 24th, 2010

Emily Blunt is hotter than the real Queen VictoriaGolden Globe-winner Emily Blunt stars as England’s longest serving monarch in The Young Victoria, a period-piece drama whose biggest claim to fame may be the seriously cocky acceptance speech the film’s costume designer gave after winning an Oscar. But we won’t hold that headshaking moment against it, as The Young Victoria is a surprisingly well done movie, if a little light on any memorable material.

Sunshine Cleaning Movie Trailer Review

December 9th, 2008

I just watched the new movie trailer for the upcoming film Sunshine Cleaning, and it looks pretty good. From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine (their next film is called The Dark in the Darkness), the movie is about two house-cleaners (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt) who decide to open their own crime scene cleaning business to rake in the real dough. Puking at the smell of dead people occurs.

As with the aforementioned Oscar-nominated film, Sunshine Cleaning just likes like a nice, laid back comedy that never takes itself too seriously while still delivering a “serious” story and believable characters. Adams and Blunt are both on a roll right now, so I hope this one does well.

Here’s the Sunshine Cleaning movie trailer:
