Review: ‘The Impossible’ Hits DVD Like a Tsunami

April 23rd, 2013
the-impossible-movie

Naomi Watts cries, screams and whimpers in The Impossible, a foolishly titled movie about a very serious incident involving Thailand, the year 2004 and a tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people. At times powerful, at other times drawn out and melodramatic, The Impossible is an engaging if overeager drama.

Review: The Overlooked ‘Perfect Sense’

December 30th, 2012
perfect-sense

The world is slowly going to hell. It’s not overpopulation. Or war. Nuclear disaster? Nope. Not even famine. The world is going to hell because people are losing their senses. Smell. Taste. Hearing. Sight. People are losing their connection with the world, and there is nothing they can do to stop it. That’s the premise of Perfect Sense, a largely overlooked romantic drama starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green.

Late Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

August 20th, 2012
salmon-fishing-in-the-yemen

From the director of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat and The Shipping News comes Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, a low-key romantic drama about two people who find chemistry through the oddest of avenues: a project to introduce salmon fishing into the deserts of Yemen. Hence the title.

Haywire Is Only Sort of Haywire

May 3rd, 2012
haywire-gina-carano

Stephen Soderbergh’s experimental action film Haywire packs punch and an exceptional cast, but there is a reason why action movies are done a certain way. While some of the director’s techniques work, others fall flat, resulting in an entertaining but far-from-groundbreaking film.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

Beginners Movie Review: Why You Should See It

December 15th, 2011
beginners

Your mom’s dead. I’m gay and have a young male lover. Oh, and I have cancer. Not exactly what you expect or want to hear from your 75-year-old father. Ewan McGregor stars as Oliver, a man who faces these scenarios and more in Beginners, an extremely good romantic drama that also stars Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent.

Tripping on the Trainspotting Blu-Ray

September 18th, 2011
trainspotting

Long before Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, Danny Boyle introduced both himself and Ewan McGregor to American audiences with Trainspotting, still considered one of the best drug-themed dramas ever made. The movie was neither Boyle’s nor McGregor’s first movie, but it was their first to make a real impact across the pond, thanks to Boyle’s frenetic direction, McGregor’s lively performance and a dead baby crawling on a ceiling.

Movie Review: Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer

September 10th, 2010

Roman Polanski. Love him or hate him, he’s a very good director responsible for several timeless classics. His latest is The Ghost Writer, a thriller starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan and Olivia Williams. At times captivating, other times flat, the movie is not one of his better productions. Still, a weak Polanski production is superior to most movies currently available.
