Review: ‘Spring Breakers’ is Not For Disney Princesses

March 22nd, 2013
spring-breakers

The Walt Disney Company presents a new family friendly film starring two of its very own princesses – Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens – all but assuring a new franchise that will eventually be spun into an ABC Family sitcom. It’s Spring Breakers, an innocent film about innocent Amish girls who find themselves stranded in Florida during Spring Break.

Oz, the Great and Powerful Movie Review

March 8th, 2013
oz-great-and-powerful

What does $325 million buy you these days? A groundbreaking prequel to The Wizard of Oz, or an unimaginative orgy of cartoonish special effects starring James Franco playing James Franco? Oz the Great and Powerful is more the latter than the former.

Watch the New Spring Breakers Red Band Trailer

Selena Gomez may have been a Disney princess, but she isn’t anymore. The off-and-on Bieber bombshell stars in the clearly R-rated crime thriller Spring Breakers, alongside Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine and a very sleazy looking James Franco, which at the very least looks like a steamy and deranged film.

oz-great-and-powerful

Even after all this time, we’re [thankfully] not quite ready for a Wizard of Oz remake, but that’s not stopping Sam Raimi for directing the colorful Oz Great and Powerful, about a small-time circus magician named Oscar (James Franco) who is swept by – you guessed it – a tornado into the fantastical Land of Oz.

There are a lot of good movies to choose from right now. In theaters, several are competing for box office dollars and Oscar glory. On DVD, all the big summer hits have been released. Oh, what to choose?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, one of the biggest surprises of the summer, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. A box office and critical hit, the excellent primate film is shockingly alluring, even realistic, with a nearly speechless performance by Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape.

Why Do Scientists Hate Us So Much?

August 21st, 2011
rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes

Scientists never learn, do they? They want to help humanity. They want to cure diseases. They want to better mankind. But what do they ever really do? They just create genetically altered, superiorly intelligent animals that will eventually revolt and turn humans into voiceless slaves. Silly scientists. We deserve to be enslaved for their hubris.

127 Hours Movie Review

November 3rd, 2010

The Oscar race just got a little more crowded as Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours enters the mix. An energetic, beautifully shot and superbly acted film based on the harrowing true story of Aaron Ralston, a devil-may-care adventurer who finds himself alone and trapped in an isolated canyon in Utah. His hand pinned between a rock and the canyon wall (or, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” as the book title suggests), Ralston spent more than five days facing certain death before making a crucial decision to survive. 127 Hours is one of the best movies of 2010.
