‘Finding Nemo’ vs. ‘Arthur Christmas’: You’ll Win Both Ways

December 11th, 2012

Two family movies. Two great movies. Two films that share diametrically opposed box office performances.

Finding Nemo and Arthur Christmas were recently released to Blu-ray and DVD, the former in Disney’s Collector’s Edition packaging, the latter for the first time since its theatrical release last Thanksgiving. Finding Nemo is generally regarded as one of the best animated movies of all time, and it is also one of the highest-earning Disney movies over that same period (all time). Arthur Christmas, meanwhile, was widely disregarded by audiences and bombed at theaters.

The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

January 9th, 2012
most-disappointing-movies-2011

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

Arthur Christmas Movie Review

November 23rd, 2011

It’s worth celebrating when Hollywood produces a Christmas movie that’s actually worth watching. There’s a reason why the most popular holiday movies are from yesteryear: it’s hard, apparently, to make a movie that sincerely captures the Christmas spirit. Over the last decade, Tim Allen and Vince Vaughn have combined to almost singlehandedly destroyed the genre, giving us such disasters as Santa Claus 3, Christmas with the Kranks, Fred Claus and Four Christmases. There hasn’t been a good holiday-themed movie since 2003′s Elf.

X-Men: First Class: Better on Blu-Ray?

It was the summer of comic book movies, but few if any received the critical praise that X-Men: First Class received. Whether it was due to lowered expectations set by the last two movies – X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine – or something else, audiences and critics alike lapped up Matthew Vaughn’s prequel like slobbering dogs, lavishing it with praise that, frankly, it doesn’t deserve.

Nevertheless, despite its glaring flaws, X-Men: First Class is an entertaining movie that will fit nicely in a home collection. It’s now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

X-Men: First Class Movie Review

After a disappointing sequel and a miserable prequel, the X-Men franchise returns to the big screen with a new cast, a new time period and a new look. From director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), X-Men: First Class is an edgy reboot that entertains but fails to live up to expectations set by its predecessors.

May 23rd, 2011

There are few things more classic than the tale of “Romeo and Juliet”. The timeless love story has been read or seen in some form or another by the vast majority of educated audiences. But never like this. Never animated, acted out by gnomes. Ladies and gentlefolk, I introduce to thee Gnomeo & Juliet.

The Conspirator: A Pleasant Shot to the Head

The life and assassination of Abraham Lincoln is one of the most widely known periods of American history, and yet one of the least explored by modern cinema. In The Conspirator, director Robert Redford focuses on the trial of Mary Surratt, who was accused of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to murder Lincoln. The movie is one of 2011′s best so far.
