The 12 Funniest Movies of 2012

January 19th, 2013
funniest-movies-2012

There are all kinds of comedies, some more critic friendly than others. Stupid comedies… critics hate those. Dramatic comedies… boy, do critics eat those up. But what really matters when it comes to comedies? I have very specific criteria: a good comedy has to make me laugh.

Review: Wreck-It Ralph Destroys Expectations

November 2nd, 2012
wreck-it-ralph-fists

Little kids like video games. Their parents grew up playing video games. How on earth did it take until 2012 for a movie about video game characters to hit theaters? Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph is one of the most entertaining and funniest animated movies I’ve seen in a long time, and I can’t even fathom a single child who will not be enthralled by the picture.

Watch the Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

June 7th, 2012
wreck-it-ralph

Wreck-It Ralph is your typical 80′s video game villain. People love to hate him, he gets conquered by the good guy, and he’s extremely pixelated. In Disney’s new animated film, John C. Reilly voices the bad guy of one such game who decides he no longer wants to be a bad guy, and sets out into the world of video games to find his true calling. It’s like Tron, except the characters are already inside the computer.

The Dictator Says You Should Watch His Movie

May 16th, 2012
dictator

Six years after he blew audiences away with Borat and three years after destroying all goodwill he previously earned with the horrendous Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen is back with The Dictator, a very quotable movie about a racist, sexist, anti-Semitic Middle Eastern dictator who travels to New York City to talk about his plans for obtaining nuclear power before the United Nations.

We Need to Talk About Kevin Review

March 2nd, 2012
we-need-to-talk-about-kevin

There is depressing, and then there is misery. And then there is We Need to Talk About Kevin, one of the most soul-sucking movies of all time. Featuring yet another great performance by Tilda Swinton and a disturbingly alluring story, the movie is also one of the best of 2011.

Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie Review

March 1st, 2012
tim-and-erics-billion-dollar-movie

I got invited to a free press screening to Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, but it was during the workday. The thought of leaving work and going to watch this idiotic-looking movie was too much to bear. So, instead, I spent $10 to watch it On Demand. That is ten dollars and an hour and a half I will never, ever get back.

Christoph Waltz Shines in Polanski’s ‘Carnage’

December 16th, 2011
carnage-roman-polanski

Carnage is one of those deliciously uncomfortable films that makes you squirm in your seat but crave for more.  Adapted from the stage play “God of Carnage”, Carnage tells the story of two couples attempting to be civil in the wake of a school altercation between their two sons, in which one hit the other in with a stick. In the face.  Minus the opening shot (which shows the incident), the entire film plays out in the apartment of Penelope and Michael Longstreet (Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly), the victim’s parents.  Nancy and Alan Cowan (Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz), the perpetrator’s parents, must eat humble pie (both literally and figuratively) to try to smooth out the situation.

Terri Comes to DVD and Blu-Ray

October 11th, 2011
terri

Terri, the new drama-comedy starring Jacob Wysocki, Creed Bratton (as in Creed from “The Office”), Olivia Crocicchia (my, how have we grown up from “Rescue Me”!) and John C. Reilly, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The film, about a fat kid who wears pajamas to high school who finds himself befriended by both the principal and a pretty girl, is entertaining, but not always fulfilling.

But is it worth watching? Read our Terri movie review to find out.

Terri Movie Review

June 30th, 2011
terri

John C. Reilly is filling a unique niche genre right now: two films in two years where he plays a guy who attempts to understand an overweight youth.  But Terri is no Cyrus. Despite the outward similarities of the two comedy-dramas, Reilly’s performance and relationship here strike a much different note.

Exclusive New Terri Movie Photos

June 23rd, 2011

John C. Reilly is one of my favorite actors. Thankfully, I’m pleased to present a small handful of new movie stills from his upcoming movie Terri - which debuts in select theaters on July 1, 2011.

A hit at the Sundance 2011 Film Festival, “Terri” is a drama-comedy about the relationship between Terri (Jacob Wysocki), an oversized teen misfit, and the garrulous but well-meaning vice principal (John C. Reilly) who takes an interest in him.

Cedar Rapids Movie Review

June 21st, 2011
cedar-rapids-john-reilly

Between the two Hangover movies, star Ed Helms took a solo stab at comedy with the early 2011 release Cedar Rapids, a movie about a naively innocent insurance salesman who travels out of state for the first time to an insurance seminar, where he gets himself into a variety of absurd situations. Cedar Rapids is a mildly amusing comedy that never quite finds its footing.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Movie Review

March 21st, 2010

Cirque du FreakThe Harry Potter franchise comes to a close next year (and, unless a fifth novel is written, the Twilight saga as well) and studios are still scrambling to find a suitable box office replacement. One of the latest contenders is Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, which is an adaptation of the first three books of the 12-part “The Saga of Darren Shan” book series. Based on the final product, it is clear this is no franchise-maker.

Step Brothers Movie Trailer Not That Funny

February 29th, 2008

I hate to say it, but the new Step Brothers movie trailer is not that funny. The movie stars one of my favorite all-time actors, John C. Reilly… oh, and Will Ferrell… and is about two grown men who become step brothers when their parents get married. The catch: they’re both losers, so they both live at home, which means they have to share a room. Essentially, it’s like Billy Madison only with two of them.
