New Lone Ranger Trailer, Poster and Photos, Oh My!

October 4th, 2012
lone-ranger-poster

Last time you saw Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp team up, the result was a quiet franchise known as Pirates of the Caribbean. Actually, it was the stellar animated movie Rango. Their latest unholy union is The Lone Ranger, a super-expensive and problem-laden western adventure flick that may or may not involve werewolves and other supernatural creatures.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are ‘Dark Shadows’

May 11th, 2012
dark-shadows

Tim Burton. Johnny Depp. Together again. Woopty-fucking-doo.

Dark Shadows is a big screen adaptation of a television show that apparently was popular decades before I was born, and is about a rich young man named Barnabas Collins who is cursed by his evil witch mistress Angelique to forever being a vampire. She then locks him in a coffin for 200 years. He is released in the 1970′s, where he discovers that his family’s estate is in ruins, his odd family is odd and that Angelique is still alive and kicking, and also the business competition.

Johnny Depp as Tonto Is All Kinds of Wrong

March 10th, 2012
lone-ranger-johnny-depp-tonto

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first still image from the upcoming movie The Lone Ranger, to be directed by Gore Verbinski and starring his Pirates of the Caribbean caricature Johnny Depp… not as the title character, but as his Native American sidekick Tonto. The movie sounded like a disaster from day one: a bloated $200+ million budget, a script filled with werewolves and other CGI monsters and, frankly, the casting of megastar Depp as the sidekick.

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard and The Rum Diary

February 23rd, 2012
rum-diary

Last time Johnny Depp took on a Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, he was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In The Rum Diary, he’s simply lost in Puerto Rico, which isn’t nearly as wild of a ride. At times entertaining, but generally forgettable, The Rum Diary‘s only saving grace is that it also stars the face and body of Amber Heard.

The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

January 9th, 2012
most-disappointing-movies-2011

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

The 10 Best Johnny Depp Movies

October 27th, 2011
johnny-depp

Johnny Depp is one of the highest paid actors working today and has received three Oscar nominations among a variety of other accolades. Even though he’s starred in more bad movies in the last decade than he has good ones, his star has only grown brighter, aided by the hundreds of millions of dollars he’s earned from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp is a talented actor, one who is willing – or even determined – to take on strange characters in strange movies. With Johnny Depp’s latest [strange] movie The Rum Diary opening in theaters this week, it’s the perfect time to look back on his 10 best movies to determine why he’s as popular as he is.

People seem to like Johnny Depp. Why? Rango: When You Combine Family Films and Drugs

August 24th, 2011
rango

The director of Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp reunite for yet another blockbuster, this one an animated western about a chameleon that can best be described as a family friendly acid trip amalgam of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, A Fistful of Dollars, City Slickers and the strange “dream” sequence from the second or third Pirates movie. If that sounds crazy to you, Rango is, but Rango is also one of the better movies of the year.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Movie Review

May 22nd, 2011
on-stranger-tides

If a tree falls in a forest and no one’s around, does it make a sound? If Captain Jack Sparrow returns in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, does anyone care? And most importantly, with most of the original cast gone and a new director, is it any good? The answer to the latter is ‘not very’, as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides looks nice but lacks the energy of the previous entries.

The 10 Worst Johnny Depp Movies

May 19th, 2011
captain-jack-sparrow

Johnny Depp is often praised as one of the best actors working today. And he is. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make a few stinkers here and there. In fact, as his popularity has risen the quality of his movies have decreased dramatically, primarily thanks to his unholy union with Tim Burton.

The Tourist Movie Review: Bad, and Then Worse

May 4th, 2011
the-tourist

What a year for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Or, more importantly, audiences of their films. In 2010, two of the biggest stars on the planet contributed to the world not one, not two, but three bad movies. They capped off the year by joining forces to make The Tourist, a pitifully dull and stupid caper that somehow was nominated for Best Comedy at the Golden Globes.

Alice in Wonderland Movie Review

March 6th, 2010

Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Alice in WonderlandFriday was a good day, up until I left work. At 5 pm, I drove home, ate some food and did some dishes. At 8 pm, I finished watching the Disney movie Old Dogs, which was painfully bad. At 10 pm, I sat down in a sparsely populated theater to watch Tim Burton’s new movie Alice in Wonderland. It’s truly sad that Old Dogs was the more enjoyable experience.
