When the Total Recall remake was announced, I thought it was a terrible idea. The Arnold Schwarzenegger version is still a blast, so why fix what ain’t broke? But then the trailer was released, and the Colin Farrell-starring action film didn’t look half bad. A rip-off of The Fifth Element and Blade Runner perhaps, but not half bad.

If there’s one thing Marky Mark is good at these days, it’s being a badass. Whether playing an up-and-coming boxer or a military sniper, the former rapper knows how to throw a punch and look all-menacingly like. Even when his movies aren’t very good, you know you’re going to get an energetic, badass performance from the guy*. Takes Contraband, his latest movie. It’s routine and unremarkable, but Mark Wahlberg does what he does best: play a badass, and that’s enough.

Ignoring the third movie, the Underworld franchise has delivered some cheap thrills over the years and lots of tight black leather-clad Kate Beckinsale, which is more than can be said for a lot of movies. With Beckinsale’s career not exactly taking off, it’s no surprise that the beautiful actress is returning to another entry in the franchise.

With the advent of special effects and life-like cartoons, the question continues to be posed: is the value of major actors in film deteriorating? Further pushing the issue are such films as The Hangover and a string of action flicks that have gone on to dominate the box office despite the lack of demonstrable stars. And yet, evidence of star power is in full force when the only good thing about a movie is the lead actor, as is the case with Kate Beckinsale in Whiteout. And sadly, the only highlight is a shower scene planted early enough in the movie to trick audiences into believing they may be seeing something worthwhile.
