Review: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is ‘Smashed’

Denzel Washington got the glory, Mary Elizabeth Winstead deserved it. Flight won the box office ($161 million worldwide), while Smashed didn’t even register ($376 thousand… total). And yet Smashed, another 2012 movie about alcoholism, is a much more earnest and engaging drama than Flight ever was.

Abraham Lincoln is often regarded as the greatest president to have served the United States of America. He helped abolish slavery. He sacrificed the lives of many Americans to reunite the north and south. He singlehandedly saved the country from a legion of vampires.

The Thing: Better or Worse than John Carpenter’s?

When is a remake not really a remake? It isn’t quite clear what The Thing is. Like the alien, which isn’t human but can mimic every aspect of the people it consumes, the movie is technically and literally a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic, but it shares the same time title, plotting and setting. It is, in essence, a remake that was smart enough not to be a remake.

The Thing 2011 Trailer

The first trailer for the horror remake/prequel The Thing is now online. The first thing I noticed: it looks a hell of a lot like the John Carpenter version. The second thing I noticed: it doesn’t look as good as the John Carpenter version. That’s not at all surprising.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Movie Review

Michael Cera is known for playing a geeky and awkwardly charming young man in every movie he appears, and if that’s a shortcoming it doesn’t explain the masterpiece that is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In this action-comedy-romance from the director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, Cera plays the exact same character he did in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, only here he has super powers and video game upgrades. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is the ultimate movie for nerds, but it will appeal to broader audiences if they give it a chance.
