Review: Streep and Jones Get Frisky In ‘Hope Springs’

January 9th, 2013
hope-springs

My fantasy has finally come true. For years I’ve dreamed of a Meryl Streep/Tommy Lee Jones sex scene, and Hope Springs turned those dreams into reality. Funny and heartwarming, Hope Springs looks at the efforts of an aging couple whose marriage is hanging on by threads.

The Five Best Nora Ephron Movies

September 24th, 2012

Let’s face it: The state of the modern Hollywood romantic comedy is abysmal.  Sure, there have been a couple of diamonds in the rough here and there; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch-Drunk Love come to mind.  The bad news is that I had to reach all the way back to 2004 and 2002 for examples.  For many, including myself, it feels like Hollywood is making the same movie over and over again, laden with clichés and a cast liable to include Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson.

Win Meryl Streep’s ‘The Iron Lady’ on Blu-ray!

April 10th, 2012
iron-lady

The Iron Lady debuts on DVD and Blu-ray today, and we’re giving away a free copy of the movie on Blu-ray. I fluctuate between recommending this Margaret Thatcher drama and not; on the one hand, it features an incredibly excellent and transformative performance by Meryl Streep, in which she surpasses the already high expectations set every time the actress appears on screen (as evidenced by her long overdue victory at the Academy Awards this year); on the other, the movie largely misses the mark in capturing what made Margaret Thatcher so interesting, instead opting to focus on her later years as she battles dementia.

In other words, great performance, but boring movie.

Meryl Streep gave the best performance but still managed to be a surprise win, while Billy Crystal gave us a much better show than recent years… with Hugo and The Artist battling for top honors.

Predictions for the 2012 Academy Awards – Were We Right?

February 26th, 2012

What a boring year for movies. The ten films nominated for Best Picture are uninspiring, and the annual shindig – the 84th Annual Academy Awards – seems prepped for a showdown between Hugo and The Artist, with the overrated Martin Scorsese drama poised to rake up in the technical categories and The Artist to more deservingly win the bigger prizes. There are a few interesting categories, but I’ll be more interested to see if host Billy Crystal can overcome the inevitable stale jokes that have plagued the Oscars for the last several years.

The Best Performances of 2011

February 25th, 2012
best-performances-2011

It’s true that the ultimate prize any actor can receive is an Academy Award. And yet, this year’s Oscars prove more than most that even the best performances can go overlooked. Seven of the top ten actors listed here were not nominated for an Academy Award, and only nine of the 20 actors who were nominated (for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role) earned a place on this coveted list.

After all, FilmJabber’s list is coveted. Because we say it is, that’s why. Without further ado, here are the 20 best performances of 2011:

A Very Late ‘The Iron Lady’ Movie Review

February 21st, 2012

Objectively, Meryl Streep is the greatest actress in the history of cinema. She has been nominated for 17 Academy Awards. She’s won twice. What few people realize is that her last win was for Sophie’s Choice, 30 years ago. She is so good that people take her for granted, shrug off her performances as "typical Meryl Streep" good. With The Iron Lady, her "losing" streak should come to an end, as she has even outdone herself.

A Fantastic [Mr. Fox] Blu-Ray

March 30th, 2010

fantastic-mr-foxLooking back on 2009, George Clooney will be most remembered for his superb performance in the excellent film Up in the Air, and Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia. But both Clooney and Streep had another extremely good movie added to their resumes at Thanksgiving – in the form of The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The stop-motion animated movie is consistently funny and entertaining, and it rightfully earned a place on my top ten movies of 2009 list – tied for tenth with Up.
