Skyfall Revisited: Five Ways It Works, Five Ways It Doesn’t

February 16th, 2013
severine-james-bond-skyfall

Is Skyfall the best James Bond movie ever? I’d argue no, but it’s a good argument to have. There are merits to such a question – Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) is without question the most accomplished and legitimate director to ever take the reigns of the franchise, and he delivers a slick and beautifully crafted film – but there are also understandable criticisms.

James Bond is seeing green unlike anything he has seen before. Box office reports have the critically praised 007 film Skyfall debuting to $87.8 million – not counting the $2.2 million it earned on Thursday in IMAX theaters – the biggest opening for a James Bond movie ever. Even when adjusted for inflation.

Review: Is ‘Skyfall’ the Best James Bond Ever?

November 8th, 2012
skyfall-daniel-craig

Four years after Quantum of Solace and two years after MGM filed for bankruptcy, Bond – James Bond, that is – is back in what is undoubtedly one of the best films of the franchise. Directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes, best known for American Beauty, Skyfall is grand, sophisticated and abnormally personal. Its only problem: it doesn’t always feel like a Bond film.

Sony has released the all-new Skyfall movie trailer, the latest entry in the James Bond franchise. After the adequate-but-disappointing Quantum of Solace and a longer than expected hiatus due to financial troubles with MGM, the studio is going all out with Skyfall, which features M (Judi Dench) making a huge mistake that appears to cost the lives of several secret agents (and the destruction of MI6?), Ralph Fiennes stepping in to clean up the damage, James Bond (Craig) getting shot and apparently killed, and Javier Bardem returning to a villain roll.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

It has ended. One of the best franchises in cinematic history is now over, The Boy Who Lived now a past event. But what an event it was. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an epic conclusion to the storied franchise, a penultimate finale that sizzles with emotion, suspense and action – and the sad acceptance that there are no more Harry Potter movies to tell.

Cemetery Junction Bashes Schindler’s List

August 5th, 2009

Cemetery Junction PictureI finally got around to watching the teaser trailer for the upcoming comedy Cemetery Junction, which is written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The movie, which doesn’t come out until sometime in 2010 (release date to be determined), apparently doesn’t have much footage yet, because the teaser trailer pretty much features Gervais and Merchant talking to the screen. Ralph Fiennes, who also stars in the film, joins them partway through.

Even though the teaser trailer is hardly a good representation of the film, it is pretty damn funny. Gervais “admits” that Ralph Fiennes was not his first choice, because he doesn’t have much experience doing comedies. Merchant interjects and tells him that he is an Oscar winner. Fiennes counters and says he actually was just nominated for an Oscar, for Schindler’s List. Gervais points out that that movie won a hell of a lot of Academy Awards, but Fiennes didn’t.

Classic.

I recommend you watch the Cemetery Junction teaser trailer immediately. You may also go to our Cemetery Junction details page.
