Sylvestor Stallone’s new movie The Expendables explodes into theaters on August 13 (exaggerated marketing pitch? Watch the trailer and tell me you think a better word is suited to describe its arrival), and that means many of his big movies are getting the Blu-Ray “special edition” makeover – along with a few of his pals’ old movies. With the Rocky movies already having received the full Blu-Ray treatment, it was only a matter of time before Lionsgate packaged all the Rambo movies into a nice, clean, bloody package.

The new Rambo movie pretty much kicks ass. Released in early 2008, the movie will certainly be the goriest movie of the year, as Sylvestor Stallone, in an unlikely comeback, has directed the film that averages over two deaths a minute. Beyond the quantity of deaths, the quality is amazing – people are torn apart by rail guns, decapitated by sniper rifles and gutted by handmade knives. This movie is every man’s dreams and a cumulation of over a decade of desire for action movies of old.

Rambo was released on DVD last week in a 2-disc special edition, which Lionsgate was so kind to send to me. The DVD includes an audio commentary with Stallone, a few deleted scenes as well as six featurettes that take a look at various aspects of the picture. Though not a massive quantity of bonus features, the featurettes provide some great and honest insight into the picture. Stallone is pretty straightforward and actually quite talkative about the making of the film, and throws in some good jokes aimed at other people on the crew.

The featurettes include:

• Legacy of Despair: The Struggles in Burma
• It’s a Long Road: Resurrection of an Icon
• A Score to Settle: The Music of Rambo
• The Art of War: Completing Rambo
• The Weaponry of Rambo
• A Hero’s Welcome: Release and Reaction

In addition, Rambo‘s second disc provides a digital copy of the movie to be used on your iPod or other portable device. All in all, the DVD package is surprisingly good; while nothing amazing, it’s a lot better than I expected to be. At the very least, it made me want to watch the film again.

Wow. I didn’t see this one coming.

Proving once again that you can’t keep audience members with no taste down, Meet the Spartans stood up to an invading empire of other films and earned $6.5 million on Friday, January 25, 2008, to beat out both Rambo and Cloverfield. Steve Mason over at SlashFilm predicts the new Rambo movie – which features Sylvestor Stallone in his latest attempt to salvage a dying career – will end up winning the weekend… But, what the Hell?

Meet the Spartans looks God awful and likely is even worse, as it is just the latest in a series of terrible spoof movies such as Date Movie and Epic Movie. Are there people who actually like these films? The comedy is inane, and when you can’t even fill out a two-minute preview with funny moments, you know you’re in store for some pain. So how did Meet the Spartans manage to make $6.5 million on Friday? I have no clue.

Rambo, which received only a 34% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, opened on Friday to approximately $6 million. I thought for sure this one would win the weekend, with not much other competition out there other than Cloverfield. I guess violent action movies really are dead, which is a real shame.

The other real shocker is Cloverfield, however. Everyone knew the movie would fall hard, as last week’s numbers were inflated by a huge fanboy rush to see it opening weekend, but could anyone have predicted a 68% freefall? The J.J. Abrams monster movie earned only $4.5 million for the weekend.

The Diane Lane thriller Untraceable opened to $3.5 million on Friday and How She Move managed to open up outside the Top Ten with approximately $1 million.

Rambo, starring Sylvestor Stallone, hits theaters January 25, 2008, and Lionsgate has just made the new outdoor movie poster available. It’s not nearly as cool as the regular poster, but certainly still has an appeal for it. I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Stallone movie, but I’m really looking forward to this bloodbath…
