Review: ‘Iron Man 3′ Has Plenty of Laughs, Few Thrills

May 3rd, 2013
iron-man-3

And people said Iron Man 2 was stupid. Robert Downey Jr. is back in the first post-Avengers Marvel film, and boy is it a cluttered mess. Featuring a bland villain, a nonsensical plot and major tonal imbalance, Iron Man 3 has plenty of laughs but very few thrills. But hey, at least Robert Downey Jr. is in it.

best-action-movies-2012

What makes the best action movie? Is it balls-to-the-wall chaos? Meditative stories with bursts of adrenaline? A smart, twisting plot? The answer, as evidenced by this list that represents the best action movies of 2012, is clear: there is no single formula to making a great action movie.

Iron Man Suffers in the First Iron Man 3 Trailer

October 24th, 2012
iron-man-3-ben-kingsley

I’m a sucker for depressing movie trailers, especially when you know the good guys are eventually going to prevail in the end. In the upcoming Iron Man 3, Tony Stark looks like he’s in for a sh*t show. A mysterious terrorist named The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) wages war on Stark and his alter ego Iron Man by obliterating his mansion and apparently stealing his suits, and that’s just the beginning.

As studios scramble to appeal to the digital download fans while still clinging to the lucrative-but-quickly-fading home video model, we get awkward releases such as the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Blu-ray combo pack, which comes with a Blu-ray disc (of course), a DVD and something called Ultraviolet (“your movies in the cloud!”).

The Avengers Shatters Box Office Records

May 6th, 2012

Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s steel, the Hulk’s smash, Captain America’s patriotism and Black Widow’s cleavage combined for quite a wallop over the weekend as The Avengers opened to $200.3 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to BoxOffice.com. That blows past the $169.2 record held by last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and sets a whole new benchmark for what defines a blockbuster.

A $200 million opening!

avengers-black-widow

You probably haven’t heard, but there’s this small indie film called The Avengers debuting in a few theaters on May 4. Yeah. It’ll probably make a few million dollars if it’s lucky. Its overseas gross will be pretty paltry. Nonetheless, this entity called Marvel seems to be obsessed with marketing this movie, to the point
where they’ve released four new movie clips from the superhero film – and two new featurettes.

The world’s greatest detective battles the world’s most devious villain in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, a flashy, fast-paced action-comedy that never reaches its potential but delivers plenty of entertainment nonetheless.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return as the bickering friends and partners Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

It’s a recipe for success.
