Romance, Love and Inanimate Objects

April 3rd, 2013
lars-and-the-real-girl

Forget the noise about a couple coming together, despite their differences or some earth-shattering apocalypse (or whatever contrivance filmmakers decide to come up with). No, today I’m exploring love of a… different nature. Something that you just won’t find in your typical top romance movie lists. Even though everyone’s favorite weatherman Brick Tamland of Anchorman fame may have been joking, others are far more serious. Love is a many splendored thing – and sometimes it can be pretty strange as well.

Review: ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’

March 29th, 2013
place-beyond-the-pines-ryan-gosling

What makes a son like his father? Is a son doomed to make his father’s mistakes? These questions are explored in the sweeping yet personal epic from director Derek Cianfrance The Place Beyond the Pines, which reunites him with his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling. At times captivating, at other times longwinded, The Place Beyond the Pines is the first good drama of the year. Unfortunately, it’s also far from perfect.

Derek Cianfrance: Ryan Gosling a Criminal Mastermind?

March 27th, 2013

I had the opportunity to sit down with writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who has a new film coming out this Friday called The Place Beyond the Pines, which stars his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling as well as Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta. While I only had a few minutes with him, I asked him about his motivations to make the film, what it’s like to work with Ryan Gosling and how both men are criminal masterminds at heart.

Review: Penn, Gosling Can’t Save ‘Gangster Squad’

January 12th, 2013
gangster-squad

Gangster Squad proves that an all-star cast and flashy direction aren’t enough for what is essentially an unnecessary and ultimately bland upgrade of The Untouchables. Featuring the likes of Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña and Giovanni Ribisi, Gangster Squad is moderately entertaining on occasion but instantly forgettable.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

The Ides of March Movie Review

October 7th, 2011
ides-of-march

It’s a rule that has stood the test of time, from the days of Julius Caesar to the poetry of William Shakespeare: hubris is a bitch that will beat you, or stab you, dead. Confidence is important, but overconfidence – especially the assumption that things will always go your way because you’re more virtuous than the next guy – will ultimately destroy you. In George Clooney’s mesmerizing The Ides of March, people are but pawns, emotion and friendship unimportant in contrast to strategy and victory, pieces of flesh to be positioned and brushed aside for the sake of success. Or the twisted form of success idealized by politicians.

Drive: The Best Movie of 2011?

September 16th, 2011
drive-2011

When will criminals learn? Stick to your guns, stick to your rules, and things will be fine. Deviate from your simple guidelines, mix in a love interest and let things get personal, and all things will go to hell. Then again, if you’re the bad guys you know you should never mess with the quiet guy who’s the protagonist in a movie, especially if he looks like Ryan Gosling and is featured in the movie Drive. Because he’ll f**k them up, and the movie will blow audiences away.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. Movie Review

July 29th, 2011
crazy-stupid-love

I’m not good with women. For whatever reason, I didn’t get that gene that allows me to undress a scorching hot Hollywood actress with a line of dialogue and a Ryan Gosling squint. I’ll keep trying, but in the mean time I can live vicariously through Crazy, Stupid, Love., a funny and lighthearted romantic comedy starring Steve Carrell and the Gosling.
