February 24th, 2013
argo

Will today be Argo‘s day to shine? Will Steven Spielberg be rewarded Best Director by default? Will Jessica Chastain win Best Actress, or will Emmanuelle Riva swoop in for an upset? Here are my predictions for the 85th Academy Awards – which 2012 movies will take home Oscar gold?

Review: ‘Lincoln’ Revisted

January 28th, 2013
lincoln-revisited

I am one of the ten percent. I am one of the ten percent of critics who did not give Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated drama Lincoln a positive review (according to Rotten Tomatoes). I was expecting a sweeping epic, and instead I got a courtroom drama. Were my expectations out of line? What did others see (not just critics, but regular moviegoers, too) that I didn’t? What did I miss?

Twilight is no Harry Potter, according to the box office numbers for the opening weekend of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, presumably and hopefully the last entry in the wretched franchise.

Review: Spielberg + Day-Lewis = ‘Lincoln’

November 9th, 2012
lincoln-daniel-day-lewis

Where’s John Wilkes Booth when you need him? Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated Lincoln – starring none other than Daniel Day-Lewis – has finally trotted into theaters, but the sweeping epic it could have and should have been instead is a two-and-a-half-hour-long courtroom procedural that will bore general audiences.

War Horse Blu-Ray A Reminder of What’s Missing

April 9th, 2012
war-horse

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is now on DVD and Blu-ray, and even without watching it again, its bonus disc reminds me just how much the movie comes so close to being great, but completely misses the mark. To call War Horse hollow is unfair – the movie is technically beautiful and not without heart – but it definitely lacks the emotion and grit expected from a Steven Spielberg war movie.

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn Movie Review

January 5th, 2012
adventures-of-tintin

Leave it to Steven Spielberg to make the massively disappointing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull only to follow it some years later with a motion-capture adaptation of a beloved European comic book that is more Indiana Jones-esque than anything we’ve seen in two decades. The Adventures of Tintin is an entertaining, fun and superbly detailed action-adventure film that people of all ages will enjoy.

War Horse Movie Review

December 25th, 2011
war-horse

It’s December, it’s Steven Spielberg, it’s Oscar time. The second of two Spielberg-directed movies to hit theaters since Wednesday, War Horse promises everything that Oscar voters love: war, family bonds and horses. Ooh, horsies! The great news is that War Horse is an excellent war movie about a horse. The bad news is that War Horse is a war movie about a horse.

The Decline of Jurassic Park in Marvelous Blu-ray

October 31st, 2011
jurassic-park

Six. That’s how many times I watched Jurassic Park in theaters. Nearly 20 years later, the Steven Spielberg movie continues to be an entertaining and exciting classic that can be re-watched over and over again. Its sequels… not so much.

Jurassic Park, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III were released last week on Blu-ray for the first time in an “Ultimate Trilogy” package, which naturally features a new documentary that looks back on the franchise, offers even more behind-the-scenes footage and includes all of the archival featurettes released in previous editions. More importantly, the Ultimate Trilogy set gives fans the ability to watch the three movies in “high definition” for the first time.

It also gives me the opportunity to recount on the decline of quality from one movie to the next.

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse Trailer is Boring

June 30th, 2011
war-horse

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is now online. The movie is almost assured multiple Oscar nominations due to the pedigree alone, let alone the “feel good” nature of the story. There’s understandable excitement for the picture, as there should be due to the director alone.

So why am I so disinterested in this property?

Super 8 Movie Review

June 10th, 2011
super-8

J.J. Abrams, one of the better directors working today, and Steven Spielberg, one of the best directors of all time, collaborate for the first time for the nostalgic sci-fi thriller Super 8. An amalgam of Spielberg’s and Abrams’ styles, Super 8 is an entertaining popcorn flick, but sadly one that never reaches its potential.

The Adventures of Tintin Teaser Trailer

May 18th, 2011
adventures-tintin

A day late, but not too late. The first teaser trailer for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is now online. That might sound goofy, it probably looks ridiculous, but what’s matter is the name on the director’s chair:

Steven Spielberg.
