Review: Emperor

March 10th, 2013
emperor-tommy-lee-jones

Portraying a little known but pivotal part of world history, Emperor tells the story of the audacious actions of General Douglas MacArthur as he sought to maintain peace in postwar Japan.  With many of Japan’s government figures already executed for war crimes, MacArthur had to decide what role Emperor Hirohito played in the war and if he too should be put to death.  The honorary and revered head of the proud nation, the Emperor was a figure shrouded in mystery; even after the war ended he remained closed away behind his palace walls.  No Americans were allowed to meet or even question the man.  Faced with deciding the future of Japan, MacArthur (played by Tommy Lee Jones) enlists General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) to covertly investigate the emperor and determine his fate.

The 20 Best Acting Performances of 2012

February 22nd, 2013
best-performances-2012

The Academy Awards separates its acting categories by sex and screen time. The Golden Globes goes as far as to separate them by genre. I say screw that. Here are the 20 best performances of 2012, regardless of sex, genre or species.

Review: ‘Lincoln’ Revisted

January 28th, 2013
lincoln-revisited

I am one of the ten percent. I am one of the ten percent of critics who did not give Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated drama Lincoln a positive review (according to Rotten Tomatoes). I was expecting a sweeping epic, and instead I got a courtroom drama. Were my expectations out of line? What did others see (not just critics, but regular moviegoers, too) that I didn’t? What did I miss?

January 9th, 2013
hope-springs

My fantasy has finally come true. For years I’ve dreamed of a Meryl Streep/Tommy Lee Jones sex scene, and Hope Springs turned those dreams into reality. Funny and heartwarming, Hope Springs looks at the efforts of an aging couple whose marriage is hanging on by threads.

Review: Spielberg + Day-Lewis = ‘Lincoln’

November 9th, 2012
lincoln-daniel-day-lewis

Where’s John Wilkes Booth when you need him? Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated Lincoln – starring none other than Daniel Day-Lewis – has finally trotted into theaters, but the sweeping epic it could have and should have been instead is a two-and-a-half-hour-long courtroom procedural that will bore general audiences.

Men in Black 3 Movie Review

June 6th, 2012
men-in-black-3

Last time we saw Agent J and K, it was ten years ago and had something to do with a sexy, tentacled bad guy and a clueless Rosario Dawson walking around aimlessly for a couple of hours. No one was asking for another Men in Black, but director Barry Sonnenfeld is back again with Men in Black III, which has Will Smith traveling back in time in search of a funny concept. He doesn’t find one.

The 9 Best Will Smith Movies

May 25th, 2012
men-in-black-3-will-smith

After a four year hiatus, Will Smith returns to theaters with Men in Black III, which reunites the star with co-star Tommy Lee Jones (and Josh Brolin, playing a younger version of Agent M). While the buzz for the sequel isn’t nearly as strong as some other movies debuting this summer, Will Smith’s box office potential should not be underestimated: his movies have raked in well over a billion dollars and multiple Oscar nominations.

Now seems like the perfect time to look at the best Will Smith movies, dating back nearly 20 years (now doesn’t that make you feel old?).

Men in Black 3 Trailer Says It’s Time to End this Franchise

March 6th, 2012
men-in-black-3

I loved the first Men in Black movie. Its sequel, the intelligently titled Men in Black 2, was mediocre at best, but still entertaining at times. Now, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back for another dose of J and K, but I have a feeling I’ll be less interested in the film’s time travel storyline and more interested in checking my watch to see how much longer remains before I can leave the theater and do something more entertaining.

Captain America Movie Review: America’s Best?

July 23rd, 2011
captain-america

The comic book adaptations have come fast and furiously this summer, yet none have established themselves among the genre’s best. Captain America: The First Avenger is the final 2011 entry, and like the other Marvel films, it’s entertaining but not much more.

Tommy Lee Jones Sues Over No Country for Old Men

September 7th, 2008

It was announced today that Tommy Lee Jones, who, ultimately, turned out to be a completely useless character in No Country for Old Men, is suing Paramount Pictures, the makers of No Country for Old Men, for over $10 million dollars from the film.

Jones is asking for “significant box-office bonuses” and other compensation he says are owed to him from the Oscar-winning movie, which went on to make over $160 million. Apparently, according to him, there were known errors in his contract as the film went into production, and he wants an external auditor to look things over and assess what he is owed.

How come every year lawsuits come up like this? Maybe it’s not that uncommon as there are plenty of B2B contracts that go to court, but it always seems like some big name actor or director (I’m thinking of Peter Jackson here) is suing a studio over money that wasn’t paid to them. You have to think that in the day and age of immediate visibility and legal scrutiny that major disputes – such as over millions of unpaid dollars – wouldn’t happen. How does this happen? Are the studios simply naive to think that people who are used to making millions of dollars a paycheck won’t notice if they aren’t paid? Or do the plaintiffs and their lawyers not examine their contract enough? Either way, isn’t the contract supposed to clearly define the amount or percentage an actor, writer, director or crewman is supposed to make?

It seems clear cut to me, but then again, I don’t work in Hollywood.
