In my review of Man of Steel, I am going to nitpick, because that’s all I can do. For all of you who have forgotten that the one-off Superman Returns wasn’t that bad, Man of Steel offers no such room for criticism: featuring a strong origin story and a second half packed with visceral action, Man of Steel is the first truly great blockbuster of the year.

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

Despite not debuting until 2013, the first official photo from the upcoming Zack Snyder Superman reboot – Man of Steel – has appeared online. Fanboy reaction has been mixed, but I don’t see what’s not too like. Sure, the scaly costume is a bit odd, but the muted, deeper colors were a much needed improvement. The cape could well be CGI, but who really cares? Noticeably hidden by shadow is Superman’s nether-region, which could or could not include the red tights.
