Review: Is ‘Parker’ Like Every Other Jason Statham Movie?

May 21st, 2013
parker-jason-statham

Jason Statham is back in the latest Jason Statham movie, where he plays Jason Statham doing Jason Statham things. The name of the game is Parker and it serves as the actor’s best film in years, but ultimately it feels like just another – sorry to sound repetitive – Jason Statham movie.

Ender’s Game is one of my favorite books of all time. Ender’s Game is being turned into a movie. That is all.

Review: Redford Returns to ‘The Company You Keep’

April 18th, 2013
company-you-keep

Robert Redford returns to the big screen for the first time in five years in The Company You Keep, a star-studded thriller that has the 76-year old actor on the lamb for a crime he did or didn’t commit decades earlier. He still can run better than I can.

Review: ‘Broken City’ is Broken

April 9th, 2013
broken-city

Mark Wahlberg. Russell Crowe. Catherine Zeta-Jones. It’s a cast made for great things, not Broken City, a flat thriller that finds inspiration in unoriginality.

A First Reaction to Whatever ‘Upstream Color’ Is

April 5th, 2013
upstream-color

I don’t know what Upstream Color is about. You don’t either. The difference: I’ve seen the movie. There is a woman and there is a thief. There is a maggot that people inhale that does stuff to them. There is a pig farm. And a pig farmer. And pigs. I’ve got that much down.

Review: ‘The Host,’ the Greatest Almost-Porn Ever

March 28th, 2013
the-host-stephanie-meyer

Uh-oh, it’s a love triangle! Or is it a love square? Either way, Stephenie Meyer’s post-Twilight novel is now a major motion picture, and it is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be. The Host presents an intriguing premise and better overall production values than Meyer’s much maligned blockbuster franchise, but suffers from the same aimless and anticlimactic storytelling – and pathetically dopey romances.

Watch the New Spring Breakers Red Band Trailer

February 23rd, 2013
spring-breakers-selena-gomez

Selena Gomez may have been a Disney princess, but she isn’t anymore. The off-and-on Bieber bombshell stars in the clearly R-rated crime thriller Spring Breakers, alongside Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine and a very sleazy looking James Franco, which at the very least looks like a steamy and deranged film.

Blu-ray Review: The Insider

February 19th, 2013
the-insider-russell-crowe

Michael Mann’s The Insider withstands the test of time, and yet few have experienced this great movie. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture back in 1999, the Al Pacino/Russell Crowe-starring movie earned only $29 million against a budget of $90 million. But money isn’t everything, right?

Wait, it is? Damn.

Review: Deadfall Falls Dead on Arrival

February 18th, 2013
deadfall

The curse of the obsessive movie critic strikes again. Despite warnings and outright cautions and having ignored the telltale signs, I gave in to morbid curiosity, and morbid curiosity had its way to me. Deadfall, the aimless thriller that has recently clawed its way onto DVD, is just that: aimless. And pointless. And barely worth the words in this movie review.

Review: ‘Beautiful Creatures’

February 13th, 2013
beautiful-creatures

The next Twilight franchise is here, but with a twist:  Beautiful Creatures, about a teenage boy who is drawn to a strange girl who has a strange family (sound familiar?), actually has intelligent writing. Shocking. Breathtaking. And kind of fun.

Review: The Right Kind of ‘Side Effects’

February 7th, 2013
side-effects-rooney-mara

A woman is depressed. She is given pills to ease her depression. The pills make her sleepwalk. While sleepwalking, she stabs her husband to death. That is the only the beginning. Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects is a twisty, alluring psychological thriller that is also the first must-see movie of 2013.

Review: Richard Gere Commands ‘Arbitrage’

Richard Gere turns in another underrated performance in Arbitrage, a thriller that is good until it loses steam in the waning minutes.

Review: ‘Compliance’ is as Maddening as the True Story

January 13th, 2013

Inspired by real events, Compliance tells the disturbing story of just how far people would go if they believed they were cooperating with law enforcement.

Review: Friedkin Returns to Form with ‘Killer Joe’

December 20th, 2012
killer-joe

Matthew McConaughey sizzles in Killer Joe, a violent but alluring crime thriller from director William Friedkin. Though the movie isn’t for everyone, Killer Joe is a rare return to form for the director whose best movies – led by The Exorcist and The French Connection – are from another age.

Review: ‘The Bourne Legacy’ Hits Blu-ray

December 11th, 2012
bourne-legacy

When it was announced that a fourth Jason Bourne movie was being developed without star Matt Damon or director Paul Greengrass, I was worried. When it was announced that returning writer Tony Gilroy was taking over the directing reigns and making a Jason Bourne movie that would include its main character, I was ready to throw in the towel. Having now watched The Bourne Legacy, I wish Universal Pictures would have thrown in the towel long ago.
