The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

January 9th, 2012
most-disappointing-movies-2011

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

25-movies-to-see-2012

2011 was a terrible year for movies. Sure, there were some good ones, but there were very few great ones. 2012 has the potential to make up for it, as long as the world doesn’t end before the summer. Here are 25 upcoming movies that you should pay attention to in 2012.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

It’s that special time of year. The air is getting colder. The weather is getting crappier. Families are coming together. Families are fighting. Families are eating big feasts. The 10 Best Johnny Depp Movies

October 27th, 2011
johnny-depp

Johnny Depp is one of the highest paid actors working today and has received three Oscar nominations among a variety of other accolades. Even though he’s starred in more bad movies in the last decade than he has good ones, his star has only grown brighter, aided by the hundreds of millions of dollars he’s earned from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp is a talented actor, one who is willing – or even determined – to take on strange characters in strange movies. With Johnny Depp’s latest [strange] movie The Rum Diary opening in theaters this week, it’s the perfect time to look back on his 10 best movies to determine why he’s as popular as he is.

Top Five Rainy Day Films

October 10th, 2011
rainy-day-movies

It’s raining in Los Angeles.  This is rare enough that every time it happens all my friends change their Facebook status and everyone forgets how to drive.  Which is annoying.  But you know what isn’t annoying?  Curling up on the couch and watching the perfect rainy day movie.  So, in the spirit of autumn weather reaching LA (however brief it may be) here are my top five rainy day girly films.

The Best Colin Farrell Movies of All Time

August 20th, 2011
colin-farrell-best-movies

For some reason, Colin Farrell has developed a love-him-or-hate-him reputation with audiences and critics. I for one find him to be one of the most talented actors working today, and have felt that way since he debuted in Tigerland over a decade ago. Farrell has proven to be a versatile actor who can and is willing to take on just about any juicy role, whether it’s playing a sleazy boss in Horrible Bosses or a love-smitten hit man in In Bruges.

Farrell is receiving strong reviews for his portrayal as an evil vampire in the horror-comedy remake Fright Night, so I figured it was about time to look back on the actor’s career.

The X-Men return with a fury today, promising some great retro mutant action (I love me some retro mutant action). After two bad movies (X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine), X-Men: First Class is receiving rave reviews. X-Men: First Class currently has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s being called “a welcome return to form for the franchise.”

The 10 Worst Johnny Depp Movies

May 19th, 2011

Johnny Depp is often praised as one of the best actors working today. And he is. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make a few stinkers here and there. In fact, as his popularity has risen the quality of his movies have decreased dramatically, primarily thanks to his unholy union with Tim Burton.

The Best Vin Diesel Movies of All Time

April 27th, 2011
vin-diesel

Fast Five races into theaters this Friday, promising more mindless, over-the-top action from the franchise that unfortunately keeps on giving.

Believe it or not, it’s been ten years since the Fast and Furious franchise launched Vin Diesel into stardom – and it’s the perfect time to talk a look back at the throaty bald actor. Despite being best known for doing action movies, many of his best films are in other genres.

Without further ado, here are the best movies of Vin Diesel’s career…

May is almost upon us, which means the summer movie season is almost upon us. The 20 Best Performances of 2010

February 23rd, 2011
best-performances-of-2010

The 83rd Academy Awards are this weekend, which means by the end of Sunday four actors will have been chosen to be the best among the tens of thousands of players who performed in movies in 2010. But while a spattering of people here and there see the Oscars as the ultimate award show, we know better… there is no higher privilege than being selected by FilmJabber.

We might not have fancy awards shows or alcohol-and-drug-fueled after parties (I’m just saying that to steer the police off course!) or beautiful women in sexy dresses or Jack Nicholson, but FilmJabber’s list is just the best. Take our word for it.

Without further ado, here are the top 20 performances of 2010…

The Top Ten Movies of 2010

January 24th, 2011
best-movies-of-2010

Well, at least 2010 was better than 2009. While the quantity still wasn’t there, the movie studios gave us more than a few standout films of the year. In fact, unlike last year, we had no problem finding ten movies for this list – the hard part was eliminating several great movies that just didn’t make the cut.

Here are the top ten movies of 2010.

The Worst Nicolas Cage Movies of All Time

January 4th, 2011
worst-nicolas-cage-movies

Nicolas Cage is the one of the strangest actors working today. He’s done some great action movies (The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off). He’s shown he has acting chops (when acting like a drugged-out loser) in Leaving Las Vegas and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. And yet for each good movie he makes, he stars in five dreadful ones.

With Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch opening this weekend, which from what we’ve heard is even worse than it looks, it only seems to fitting to examine the eight worst movies of Nicolas Cage’s career.
