Movie Review
The latest comic book adaptation, "Constantine" is based on the "Hellblazer" series, a dark collection about a bitter, chain-smoking Brit who looks like Sting and who fights demons and other ghouls from Hell so that he can buy his way into Heaven. Though I have not read any of the comics, it is understandable that fans have been screaming bloody murder, as "Constantine" is not very gritty, and its title character is noticeably American and played by Keanu Reeves. August 15, 2005I never liked Keanu Reeves and maybe I still don't but he was perfect for this film (or maybe he wasn't but he sure didn't ruin it!). There is a lot of symbolism in the film and dry humor. I never read the comix or the book version but that may have prejudiced people against the film. It was dramatic and scary and wonderful and the effects were great. Hell was hellish, Constantine was an alcohollic, cancer ridden, asshole who found redemption. The angel Gabriel was an anorexic blonde with an angular haircut who was also quite psychotic. The obese priest was great, the lady cop was not just a pretty face and for God's sake they never even kissed. And Lucifer was a riot with his bare feet and that white suit. And even when he was being called to heaven, Constantine gave the devil the finger. And there were lots of cool lines. Then at the end when he has been redeemed, he reaches into his pocket for what we assume is a cigarette but what is actually nicotine gum.
Not my favorite movie but engaging and amazing and well worth seeing.
