Movie Review
Sometimes you have to sell out to do good. Someone told me that once. Not really. Many of Kevin Smith's small but devoted legion of fans - which includes me - cried foul when Cop Out debuted, and it's understandable why. A generic buddy cop movie starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan, Cop Out is a departure from Smith's other movies and a clear cash grab. I'm not complaining, but I am saying. Despite its lack of originality, Willis and Morgan do manage to piece together enough funny moments to help the film avoid being a complete wash.

July 19, 2011I will tell you right away that this movie fails across every genre. It fails to be funny, it fails to be a crime, it fails to be a drama, and fails as a whole. I saw previews and commercials for this film and I was pretty psyched to see this movie. I thought yeah, another buddy cop film, but this one will succeed. Absolutely false.
The movie starts off as if we know these characters already, which quite frankly, we don’t. It expects us to care for them and cheer them on. We don’t. When they’re both suspended after letting a criminal get away, there’s no way in hell Jimmy can pay for his daughter’s wedding. Now the only chance of getting the money is to sell a beloved legendary baseball card of his. Ready to hand the card to the clerk, a goofy robber busts in and tases them both, steals the card, and makes a run for it. This bumbling robber is played by Sean William Scott, and respectively, he’s the only guy that makes me laugh. And they’re only partial “giggles” because they’re cheap jokes and nothing else in the movie is remotely funny. With all of the previews I suspected Tracy Morgan was supposed to be the star, he was supposed to be the funny man; this was supposed to be a hit. But I can’t understand anything Tracy Morgan is saying. Is this why he’s funny? Because I can’t understand him? Probably. After a meaningless plot and stupid gags, Cop Out wants us to want Jimmy to get his card back. I’d rather he didn’t.
I guess I can say I kind of saw it coming, but in the end I was fairly disappointed. Truthfully, the movie drags on for a painful two hours and I found myself dozing off at times. Boring, old, and down-right idiotic, I can promise to skip this one. D+
