"Venus" tells the story of Maurice and Ian, a pair of veteran actors (Peter O'Toole and Leslie Phillips respectively), who never quite hit the big time. Now in their 'golden years', they continue to work, though the jobs are far from glamorous. But their comfortable routine and witty banter over breakfast in a favorite café is disrupted by the arrival of Ian's grand-niece, Jessie (newcomer Jodie Whittaker).

Having not watched Venus
until shortly before its DVD release, I sat through the Oscars listening to speculators considering Peter O'Toole had a shot at gold and thinking that he doesn't deserve an award just because his time in this world is coming to an end. Needless to say, I thought the only reason he had a chance was because of this. I stand corrected. O'Toole delivers an award-worthy performance in Venus
, a film which in itself is terrific.
