Meet Joe Black is about the strangest romance movie you'll ever come by; it's sort of like City of Angels where an angel gives up his immortality for the love of a woman, only the angel is Death and Death cannot give up his immortality.
Brad Pitt is Death (or Joe Black), Claire Forlani is the daughter he falls in love with, and Anthony Hopkins is the rich tycoon who knows he is about to die. With the exception to one line, Pitt is overly calm the entire film, which either makes his performance really good or really bad. It is annoying to listen to him at times because he sounds like a little kid on morphine, but he does fit his character well. This is probably Forlani's best movie to date. As for Anthony Hopkins... he's Anthony Hopkins, although I'm sure he's been in better movies.
Meet Joe Black could be considered interesting in content, but it definitely isn't that interesting to watch. It isn't that the movie is boring or even slow; it just isn't stimulating. The film's story barely moves at a pace that is very entertaining and there aren't many big developments through the three hour movie (yes, three hours). While watching, Joe Black didn't seem like three hours, which is a good thing, but I was doing other things to keep myself occupied. I think if done right this movie could easily have been sculpted down to a normal length movie.
What saves Meet Joe Black from really being a bad movie is the chemistry between the two hot stars, Claire Forlani and Brad Pitt. Pitt is obviously well known, but Forlani is one of the sexiest actresses to come around in a while. Even if she wasn't, the scenes between the two are more interesting than all of the others combined.
Meet Joe Black isn't a bad movie; it just isn't very exciting and it's really, really long. In three hours, I could meet, meet, and meet Joe Black again.
