My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Movie Review
I was in a different place when the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out. The drugs. The women. The fights. At the time, I called the massive box office surprise “hilarious” and “witty,” and I remember laughing repeatedly in my moments of drug-free lucidity.
And maybe it was that good. I haven’t seen it since.
All I know is that the long overdue and wholly unnecessary My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not hilarious nor witty.
In fact, it’s downright dull. Writer and star Nia Vardalos is back, along with the rest of the cast and a new angry teenage daughter, but the movie feels tired from the first minute--not surprising given that nearly 15 years have passed and the film establishes no real reason for us to be returning to the lives of this quirky, Greek-American family. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is largely a collection of stale sitcom jokes and antics that may have, with a better, more heartwarming story, worked years ago, but as is it offers little in the way of laughs or fun.
Some less discerning fans of the original may find something to enjoy, but your better bet is to revisit the original to see if it still has entertainment value. This drab sequel certainly doesn’t.
*The drugs, access to loose women, and bar fights may or may not have actually happened.
