Nutty Professor II: The Klumps Movie Review
Eddie Murphy may be enjoying his best box office debut ever, but is Nutty Professor II: The Klumps his best movie? No, but it's not his worst, either. Compared to the movies after The Nutty Professor, this one is a Godsend. And compared to the original, it might be just a little better.
Eddie Murphy is just about every character in the movie, with exception to Janet Jackson and a couple smaller supporting cast members. He plays the entire Klump family except for the kid, which means a lot of time to get into the characters. Literally. He is very impressive as just about everyone, his charisma jumping out of every character. The only one that still doesn't appeal to me is Buddy Love, who was the main flaw in the first film. This time, he is even more eccentric, more loud-mouthed, and no where as clever as before. Murphy really shines in the oversexed grandma (Janet Jackson says this reminds her of her real life grandma? What an insult.) and the two parents.
Nutty Professor II: The Klumps is funnier pound for pound than the original, but it doesn't have as many classic scenes as the original. The dream sequence where Sherman is farting his way through space is great, but nothing compared to the dream sequence in the first movie. The dinner table scene doesn't even compare to that of the first one. However, all in all I was laughing more at the sequel than the original, and I know why. When I went into the original a few years back, I was expecting a family fare; instead, The Nutty Professor was a Murphyesque gross out comedy filled with sex jokes and other things like that. This time, I knew what was in store.
The movie is also zanier, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it. There are giant hamsters, horny grandmas, genetic tamperings, and youth potions, which may seem to some people that this movie has gone over the edge and gotten away from the essence of the film. However, on the other hand, the movie is funnier because of it. The jokes surrounding the hamster are quite memorable.
Nutty Professor II: The Klumps is a funny movie, but only for those people who enjoy sick comedies. The movie is a little raunchy and sex crazed, but has so much in-your-face physical comedy that it is hard not to laugh. It might not be as memorable as the original, but it is a little funnier.
(Two weeks later)
After giving this movie a couple weeks of consideration, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps is a pretty poorly put together movie. The comedy is really sick and I have no interest in seeing this movie again (I really have had no interest to see the first movie again, either).
