Priceless Movie Review
Audrey Tatou has been cute. She's been deadly. And in Priceless, she is damn hot. Alongside Gad Elmaleh, the French star plays a gold digger who falls in love with a poor bartender at a fancy hotel. Sex, romance, jealousy and more gold digging ensue. Unfortunately, the comedy remains to be seen.
Priceless, which was recently released on DVD in the United States, is a mildly entertaining movie where its main highlight is Tatou walking around in a variety of sexy outfits, or not much at all. Basically, this movie is a guy's fantasy disguised as a romantic comedy, as it's about a sexy woman who sleeps her way into lots of money but then sets her sights on a normal, not particularly attractive, guy who doesn't have a cent to his name. Before she realizes she's in love with him, though, she teaches him how to have sex with rich women to garner some cash himself. So, in other words, it's a movie about a woman slut and a male slut who take advantage of other people.
While this is an appealing storyline, it also means that neither of the leads are particularly likable on a macro level. Elmaleh and Tatou have decent chemistry together, but their interactions always seem rather superficial. There's not a lot of depth to their relationship, and neither are very respectable when it comes to their "professions."
Still, director Pierre Salvadori takes the screenplay he co-wrote with BenoƮt Graffin and makes a whimsical, harmless tale out of it. While not particularly funny or romantic, the movie is entertaining and keeps us engaged. At the very least, Tatou looks good. Then again, that's really not enough to make the movie worth seeing. If you're in the mood for a foreign language film, there's better stuff out there.
