Teaching Mrs. Tingle Movie Review
Katie Holmes stars in another teen thriller by Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream), and this one, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, should have learned how to be entertaining before coming to school.
Teaching Mrs. Tingle is essentially about three students, including one aiming for a prestigious scholarship, who are caught cheating on the final exam of the nastiest teacher in school, and in the process of trying to persuade her into changing her course of action, they do the natural thing and... shoot a crossbow at her, knock her unconscious, and tie her to her bed. Katie Holmes stars as Leigh Ann, the one going for the scholarship, but maybe she misinterpreted her role; smart people do not try to kill their teachers!
This whole movie is stupid. The whole concept is stupid. What are the characters thinking when they take their teacher hostage? Sure, she's nasty, with no character depth whatsoever, but are they going to be able to change her mind by tying her to the bed? She knows they are not going to kill her, and as soon as she is released, she is going to call the cops. So maybe the most entertaining part of the movie is trying to figure out what the hell (nay I put in more profane words) are these people thinking?
And, with the plot given, Williamson doesn't do anything with it. There is no suspense in the movie, not much comedy (except for one scene with a drunk gym coach), and not much in the way of substance at all. At times I get the feeling that Teaching Mrs. Tingle is trying to be a psychological thriller, with the evil Mrs. Tingle playing mind games with her students, but the movie never amounts to much. And in one completely unnecessary scene, the movie wastes are time as one of the characters does a lengthy recreation of The Exorcist, for no reason whatsoever.
Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a horrible movie. It is a huge waste of an hour and a half, with nothing even remotely entertaining. I am surprised this movie ever got made.
