MOVIE REVIEW
Martin Lawrence thought he was at the top of his game. Bad Boys was a major success. The not-so-funny Bluestreak made major money, and while Big Momma's House wasn't nearly as successful, it also made a profit. Then there was 2001's What's the Worst That Could Happen?, which tanked... but that's okay because that movie started with a 'W' and all his hits have started with a 'B'. Thanks to Black Knight, he returns to his successful letter, but this black man-in-the-middle-ages story proves that you need more than just star power to make a good movie. You also need a good script, a good story, and at least enough funny moments to fill an hour and a half. Black Knight knows it is a dumb and cheesy movie, so it doesn't try too hard to explain anything. Lawrence works at a castle theme park somewhere in the United States, but when he reaches into the mote to grab a glowing amulet he sees, he is sucked back in time, and transferred to medieval England. Of course, it takes some time for him to realize where it is (I think I would notice something is wrong a lot faster than him), and when he does, he continues to act like an idiot, parading around and saying stupid things in the presence of the King and knights. And for some reason the King thinks that his stupidity means intelligence so he hires Lawrence as a Lord of sorts. Anyway, there is a plot, but it's really not that important. The movie is funny at times. When Lawrence first encounters the toilet, a hole in the floor with crap all over the place, that is funny. When... Well, there were a few other genuinely comical scenes, but I can't remember them, because by the end of the movie, I was so tired, bored, and annoyed by Black Knight that I was just trying to push it out of my brain altogether. For every comical moment, there are ten lame and cheesy parts. Lawrence tries to be funny by talking slang throughout the whole movie, but it really doesn't do anything but make him look like more of a moron. The most mysterious part of Black Knight is the presence of Tom Wilkinson, the man who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in In the Bedroom. Somehow, he ended up in this piece-of-crap movie, and makes an utter fool of himself as the drunk yet heroic knight that returns to save the kingdom. I can see Lawrence in a movie like this, but not Wilkinson. Black Knight closes the book on whether time travel comedies can be funny. There are just too many historical discrepancies to take the movie seriously, but even that wouldn't matter if it had a good script. Obviously, whoever made this movie thought that they could make a box office hit by just throwing Martin Lawrence back in time, but oh, were they wrong... Black Knight is a pretty horrible film, and it defied even my low expectations.Read our Black Knight movie review »
