Deep Impact - Movie Synopsis & Plot
At the top of a hill, 14-year-old Leo Beiderman discovered something that unknowingly would change his life, a small, pinpoint of light that his astronomy teacher thinks is just another star.
A year later, MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner is seeking her big breakthrough into the media world, hoping to uncover a government sex scandal. But what she is about to learn will be more breathtaking than anything she first thought. Broadcasting over the nation, the President of the United States, Tom Beck, announces that they have been monitoring the trajectory of a comet, named Wolf-Beiderman, after it's co-discoverers. And it just happens that the comet is on a direct course for Earth, the casualties expected to be one-hundred percent.
The United States has been creating an immense network of caves, capable of holding one million Americans for two years. In addition, a spacecraft, named Messiah, will be launched to infiltrate the comet and destroy it.
Leo Beiderman is one of the first to be contacted that he and his family will be placed in the caves. Unfortunately, his best friend and hopeful girlfriend, Sarah Hotchner, and her family, were not chosen. Out of desperation, they marry, legalizing the family ties so they can all be put in safety. Unfortunately, when the bus arrives, Sarah is on the list but her family is not; she chooses to stay with her family until the end. Deciding that he can't go on without her, Leo sets out to find her, only to end up in open air when the comet finally arrives.
As for Jenny Lerner, she is also selected, but first, she must make amends with her father.
Meanwhile, aboard the Messiah, Spurgeon Tanner and his crew land on the comet, ready to insert a nuclear device into it's center. Facing deadly situations, they boldly venture into the comet's dangerous heart. Troubles ensue, however, and the clock ticks away, as the astronauts struggle to survive. They detonate off the nuclear devices but instead of sending it off course, they split it into two halves. Both on course for Earth, the astronauts must once again risk their lives. For if they die, everybody dies. As the comet gets closer and closer to Earth, the people on Earth watch and wait for the inevitable: Deep Impact.
