Howard Brackett is a high school English teacher that is about to be married to the lovely Emily Montgomery. However, when one of his ex-students wins an Oscar, over national television, he pronounces his thanks to Howard… And that he's gay.

Suddenly, Howard's life is turned upside down as the press moves in for the kill, including the cunning Peter Malloy, his job is threatened, and he begins to wonder about his sexuality himself… Is he straight or is he really gay?
