In 1925, Egyptologist Evelyn Carnarvon and her brother Jonathon stumble across a map leading to the hidden ruins of Hamunaptra, which is supposed to contain a horde of riches and the Book of the Dead. To help guide them, they seek the assistance of Rick O'Connell, a man who has been imprisoned for three years. He fought a battle within the very city, and has no reason to return, except that the beauty of Evelyn and her assistance in freeing him from the death penalty deterred his decision.

Once arriving in Hamunaptra, they find themselves competing against a group of Americans, after the same treasure. However, after they are attacked by a horde of nomads, they decide to join forces. And then Rick, Jonathon, and Evelyn stumble across an unmarked sarcophagus, which contains a mummified body that is still decomposing. At the same time, the Americans open a case containing the Book of the Dead, which says that all who open it will die. Evelyn, unbelieving of the curse, reads from the first few pages, and Imhotep is unleashed...

As men begin to die, Rick and the rest flee the ancient ruins and return to Cairo. But not too many days later do they realize that the deadly priest has followed them there, intent to uphold the curse, regain his treasures, and use Evelyn's body to resurrect his mistress. And when he is done, the 10 plagues of Egypt will be unleashed over the land, and all those in it will perish...
