The Rock (1996) - Movie Synopsis & Plot

General Francis Xavier Hummel is a decorated military hero who, for years, has been suggesting that the United States government provide the families of his men that died in combat with the same benefits that are received by other war veterans. Never once has the government listened to him.

But they will now. Joined by a team of elite commandos, in a quick, effortless attack, Hummel has taken control of Alcatraz Island, the retired prison. Holding a number of tourists hostage, he is threatening to deploy the utterly deadly V.X. gas upon the Sand Fransisco Bay area.

The government, unwilling to bow down to his demands, are forced to send a team to infiltrate the prison. And their key to getting in is the only man to ever get out, federal prisoner John Patrick Mason.

But when the rest of the squad is wiped out in an ambush attack, he and Stanley Goodspeed, an expert in chemical weapons, are the only hope for San Fransisco.
