Swingers (1996) - Movie Review
Swingers is about a couple of guys just trying to find some women, but for one man it is a little hard because he's been out of the game for so long (six years). He's either not interested or just doesn't know what the hell he's doing, and it'll take a special someone to finally win him over, and, according to his friends, hopefully it won't be his ex.
Swingers is a dialogue comedy - most of the hilarious moments take place in fast-talking exchanges between the close friends, namely Vaughn and Favreau. Vaughn plays a street-smart, woman-loving bachelor who seems to know just what to do most of the time... most of the time.
The movie is frustrating at times, because Favreau is handed several beautiful women and he just doesn't know what to do with them. He ends up telling one girl about how he isn't over his ex, so she immediately goes into "friend" mode and tries to comfort him. That's not how you get laid. Another time, he meets a very gorgeous woman and, against his better judgment, decides to call her that same night. But his message gets cut off, so he calls her again. And again. And again. And there you have the most "awful" and most hilarious scenes of the movie.
There are a few classic moments in the movie, whether they just be the dialogue exchanges between the characters or actual situations, but overall I wouldn't considers Swingers a really funny movie. It's never boring, it's well made for a lower-budget film, and the script is good; it's just not that funny. I was expecting a lot more laughs and, more than anything else, a lot more women, and I really didn't get either of those, so I was a little disappointed.
Swingers is a fun little film to watch, but it isn't anything more than that.
