Tarzan (1999) - Movie Review

Well, I'm thinking The Lion King, and that came out when? 1995? 1994? That probably was Disney's last great animated classic, up until now. Tarzan is an incredibly animated and action-packed film that remains fairly lighthearted throughout, contrary to some of the darker plots that Disney has taken lately.

The movie brings Tarzan up from a baby, and shows his adventures as a young boy. It then snaps to his adult years when he, of course, meets Jane (unfortunately, no "Me Tarzan, you Jane"). Tarzan has a few animal friends, such as a baby elephant and an ape about his same age, which keep both the kids and adults entertained). The other entertainment comes from the fast action scenes, in which Tarzan alternates from flinging through the air on vines and sliding along tree branches like Sonic the Hedgehog, complete with a realistic forest background and 3D imagery. The scene with the tiger is extremely exciting, which is surprising coming from an animated flick.

Of course, the movie needs a plot. The plot is that of so many Tarzan movies, a poacher comes searching for Gorillas. Around this time, Tarzan meets Jane, and falls in love with her. She is accompanied by her father, who is the typical, short, and stereotype scientist. Unfortunately, he does not get that much screen time, even though his character could provide a great deal of comedy.

The only poor aspect of the movie is the rate at which Tarzan learns English. Even at the end, he's not perfect, but he skips right over the "Me Tarzan, you Jane" routine, which would have been a great addition. He seems to learn English way too fast.

Tarzan is a Disney masterpiece.
