Varsity Blues (1999) - Movie Review

Varsity Blues, one of the first movies of 1999, is also one of the biggest surprises of the year. What looked like a horrible, pointless, and trite film from MTV turned out to be a dramatic, and funny, sports movie that will appeal to the appropriate age group.

TV's "Dawson's Creek" star Van Der Beck leads Varsity's cast of no-name misfits as the surprise star quarterback. After the normal quarterback is seriously injured mid-season, he has to take to the field, even though he hates his coach and does everything he can to defy him. The coach, played by the incredible Jon Voight, does his best to fight back, and in the end, that is the real contest. Of course, a climatic football game doesn't hurt.

Overall, the acting was pretty good, based on the fact that this is an MTV teenager movie. The best character is Ron Lester, who plays the overweight Billy Bob, although most female fans will flock to Der Beck. Before seeing this film, I was wondering why Jon Voight would actually want to be a part in this kind of movie, but now I know why. Voight delivers fantastically as the overly serious jerk of a coach, and I haven't seen him this good in a few years. He definitely should be honored for his role.

As far as the movie is concerned, it's fun, although pretty stupid. The plot contains three things: football, beer, and girls. However, the girls were not as big of a part in this movie as I had presumed, which was interesting since I had heard this movie was only good for the nudity, and there wasn't that much of it. But Varsity Blues excels beyond a typical teenage movie, even though that's all it is: It is a well made teenage movie with great art direction, some good drama, and some hilarious scenes.

This movie is lonely because people have neglected it and not written kind things about it. Please help this movie feel better about itself and write a comment or review now.
