The Wood (1999) - Movie Review

One of the summer movies that slipped away before it appeared, The Wood was also one of the summer's best, if not the best.

Starring Omar Epps, Taye Diggs, and Richard T. Jones, The Wood combines witty acting with clever humor to make it one of the funniest movies in a long while.

The Wood's most redeeming aspect is the fact that the movie is based in a black suburban neighborhood. The three main characters are black, of course, but aren't portrayed as the stereotype inner-city punks. In fact, The Wood gives a more realistic look at black neighborhoods, and I really liked it.

But The Wood is not just about the life in a black neighborhood. The majority of the film is contoured around the three guys dealing with the opposite sex, first in junior high, then in high school, and finally as grown ups, as one of the guys is freaking out about getting married. In many ways The Wood is a mild-mannered sex comedy, but not in the crude way like the Farrelly brother movies or American Pie. As much as I liked American Pie, The Wood relies a lot less on physical comedy and more on clever dialogue. Furthermore, The Wood is more sincere, and funnier. I would like to note that the movie isn't a gross out comedy; my mom really enjoyed this film as well.

There's not a scene I didn't like, not a phrase that I didn't appreciate. The Wood takes us on a journey through our own lives, such as junior high dances, high school relationships, and close friendships. It's amazing how poorly The Wood did at theaters since it is a gem. The Wood is one of the few films that has content for teenagers but hits the spot with adults, and for that it should be commended. It is also one of the funniest films you will see in a long time.
