Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) - Synopsis

Set in the 1930's, New York reporter Polly Perkins begins to suspect that something is wrong when a number of famous scientists begin to go missing. Her suspicions are confirmed when a series of flying robots attack the city, but there to save the day is her ex-flame Captain Joseph Sullivan and his Flying Legion.
