Bring it On (2000) - Movie Review

Bring it On targeted its campaign at teenage guy, boasting cheerleaders in short skirts and bikinis dancing around a stage. There didn't seem to be too much room for the other audiences. So when I stepped into the theater for this sexy film, I was surprised to see the seats occupied by young adults, old adults, junior high students, and high school students... just about every age group possible. I was also surprised to find that just about every age group enjoyed the film, including me.

I went to the movie for one reason and one reason alone: To see cheerleaders. And I got it. The film is crammed with sexy teenage girls (I'm not a pervert; I'm at the right age level), including Kirsten Dunst who up until this point had not excited me too much with her looks. My opinion has changed. If you're a guy, you'll like this film. There's tons of beautiful women wearing everything from tanktops to cheer outfits to bikinis, and they can stretch far distances.

But everyone, men and female alike, young and old, can enjoy Bring it On because it is funny and witty and is able to support cheerleading and make fun of it at the same time. The opening sequence tells it all where Dunst dreams about herself becoming the next cheer captain, and all the cheerleaders are shouting about flaunting their looks and not trying to be whores. It's funny stuff.

The entire film has great direction that helps move the story along. The story is about two rival squad teams competing for the national championship, but the story really doesn't matter. There are so many little sequences (such as cheer tryouts, new training sessions, and stuff like that) that are so cleverly done that the competition isn't very important. What is important is that Bring it On never stops bringing on the comedy.

I wouldn't say Bring it On is the funniest movie in the world... There are a lot of laugh-out-loud scenes, but there is nothing over the top... But there are so many jokes that make you smile throughout the film that it is pretty much impossible to be bored.

Of course, Bring it On does have its stereotypes, such as the bitchy cheerleaders, the outcast that Dunst falls in love with, and stuff like that, but at the same time, it all helps the movie because when you think cheerleader, you think stereotype blonde with a ditzy attitude.

Bring it On is one of the best movies I've seen this summer, and it's not just because of the girls. It's harmless and one that just about the entire family can see, although it is definitely aimed at those teenager and above.
