The Memory of a Killer (2005) - Movie Review

I want to punch myself in the face for not promoting this movie sooner, as I saw "The Memory of a Killer" about two months ago and failed to write a review for it. That being said, my recollection of every little moment of the film is a bit hazy, but it is certainly one of the best movies I've seen this year.

A Dutch film about an assassin suffering from Alzheimer's, don't be scared away by the subtitles. "The Memory of a Killer" is a smart, gritty and suspenseful action-thriller that can be compared to "Leon the Professional," only the film has a much darker and less eccentric tone to it. Jan Decleir delivers a hair-tingling performance as Angelo Ledda, an aging hit man who is starting to lose his memory, but hasn't lost his ability to kill. When he is hired to murder a 12-year old girl, he refuses, and instead becomes a target himself. Pursued by both his employer and a couple of detectives who think he is going on a killing spree, Ledda decides to go on the offense, but he has to sort out his inner demons first.

"The Memory of a Killer" is intense from beginning to end, and while I rarely purchase movies myself I have considered buying this one for repeat viewing. Exciting and at times action-packed, the movie is never dull. Sure, a movie about a senior citizen who has Alzheimer's probably doesn't sound very action-packed, but rest assured that you will not be disappointed. The acting, plot and excitement factor all work hand in hand to deliver one of the smartest movies in recent years.

"The Memory of a Killer" is an amazing foreign film that proves once again that good thrillers can be created outside the United States. Highly recommended.
