Seraphim Falls (2007) - Movie Review

Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson square off against one another in Seraphim Falls, a surprisingly engaging and top-notch action-thriller set in the Old West. Shortly after the Civil War, a man named Carver (Neeson) has devoted his life to hunting down Gideon (Brosnan), an ex-soldier who is responsible for the death of his family. Carver has hunted Gideon relentlessly for weeks or months, but Gideon proves to be surprisingly resourceful and deadly. Who will survive the game of cat-and-mouse - the cat, or the mouse?

Seraphim Falls is a classic western through and through, but if you like westerns, or you like bloody action, then you'll enjoy this movie. Brosnan and Neeson are great, as both bring a rugged yet fragile bitterness to their roles. Furthermore, writer/director David Von Ancken (Abby Everett Jaques also wrote the screenplay) brings a deepness and extreme grayness to the characters, as neither is good or bad. In most movies, Neeson's Carver would be the good guy, a man who is hunting the man who killed his family. But as revenge has gotten the better of him, he has lost sight of what matters, and Brosnan's Gideon suffers because of it. Gideon is not what most would consider to be a villain, but as he has his back against a wall, he strikes out furiously against those who are hunting him.

Seraphim Falls is the perfect blend of drama and action; it is deep enough to make you care, but is fast-paced and full of non-stop chases and traps. The scenery is great, and Von Ancken really draws you into the story. Action fans will take pleasure in the movie, but those looking for something bigger than just an action-thriller will be pleasantly surprised.

There's nothing else to say. Seraphim Falls is a great movie and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
